Book Description

Twenty-year-old Maggie Roads’ parents are legendary in the country music world. She wants nothing more than to follow in their footsteps, but the limelight isn’t reserved for singers who can’t carry a tune, let alone keep a rhythm.

When her parents tell her they’re getting divorced, Maggie decides it’s time to leave home and take her future into her own hands. Moving in with Cole, her best friend and sometimes boyfriend, might not be the best of ideas, but she’s got to start somewhere. Their off-and-on romance gets even more complicated when Maggie crushes on her new voice teacher, Nathan, who unlocks her stunning potential. A sensational music career of her own is finally within reach, but Maggie might need more than perfect pitch to find what she’s really looking for.

Editorial Reviews

With its country music roots and crisp Colorado backdrop, the journey Maggie takes into adulthood gives readers the perfect blend of romance, drama, and profound self-discovery. Michelle D. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Wind! December 4, 2013
By Sarah
Format:Kindle Edition
OUT OF TUNE has become my favorite YA/New Adult title this fall! The book is about a twenty-something girl named Maggie who wants nothing more than to step out of the shadow of her country music superstar parents shadow, and sing. Turns out, it's not that easy.

I absolutely loved the fact that OUT OF TUNE was a love story, without all of the explicit sex. The author really gave the reader credit, in allowing us to use our imagination. I really empathized with Maggie and the tough decisions she had to make. I repeatedly found myself pausing in order to put myself in the same situation. Would I take on all the responsibility that would come with being with Cole? Or would I choose the comfortable life with Nathan? I just loved how deep the whole situation was.

OUT OF TUNE was definitely a page turner. Country music and out of the norm situations with the characters was a refreshing change of pace in a genre that seems to be stale. I will definitely be recommending this novel to friends and family, as well as checking out more of Michelle D. Argyles titles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story of self-discovery with a country flair. December 4, 2013
By Natalie
Maggie Roads is the daughter of two country music legends, and all she wants to do is take to the stage like her parents. There's only one problem: She's dismally "tone deaf." But she's determined to try, and with the help of her ex-but-maybe-not and a dreamy music therapist, Maggie may just yet be able to reach the stars.

Maggie's journey really spoke to me as someone in a creative industry—her desire to try but her fear of failing, her confidence one moment and her doubt the next were all things that rang so true for her situation. The struggles she faces with her parents are spot on for a 20-yr-old dying to define herself, and her relationship with both her ex and her music tutor are steamy hot.

This is the perfect book for a reader who might be interested in the New Adult genre, but may be reluctant because they don't want to read tons of sex scenes. While there are some steamy situations, they are "tame" and tastefully done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written "new adult" book with depth December 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely LOVED this romantic, coming-of-age story! There is depth to it that you don't find in your general "new adult" books. Themes, character development,'s all there, perfectly balanced out through Maggie's story. It's a story that includes country music, the ups and downs of celebrity life, sexy romantic tension (just enough to be yummy and drive you crazy, but nothing explicit!), and the struggle I think we all go through at some point in our lives to find our own way in the world. Michelle Argyle's writing style is fluid and easy to read, and yet it also has a subtle literary taste to it. Which is good! The perfect amount for me. I had read the ebook edition of this but I've already ordered a paperback copy as well, because I just have to have it on my bookshelf of favorites. I look forward to whenever Argyle releases another novel!

(I would feel comfortable recommending OUT OF TUNE to upper-YA readers as well as adults. It has some mild language and sensuality.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, love! July 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Advanced Readers Copy via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Why the hell did I not read this sooner?

I am so upset at myself for telling myself over and over, “Awww its ok Alyssia, you can read that ARC later. You have other ARC’s to read and review, no need to read that one first.” And then I would listen to myself thinking I was smart to save it last because you know I doubted its magnificent and beautifulness because I wanted to read other books first.

Ugh I hate my past self. Stupid old Alyssia.

You will not believe how much I adored this read, I had a smile plastered to my face for the duration it took me to finished the book, which was about 2 hours AND I stayed up on a school night till about 1 AM. At school I could not stop thinking about the book and it gave me a sense of hope.

The story bases itself around Maggie, the daughter of two famous legendary country singers and really her only dream is to someday follow their footsteps, to sing and have her spot in the limelight. Only the problem is that she cannot carry a tune to save her life, and everyone seems to remind her of just that. Maggie is also in love with her parent’s drummer,Cole, her bestfriend/sometimes boyfriend and at the moment they are broken up, however when she finds out that her parents are divorcing it seems Cole is the only person she can run to, though he is trying to keep his distance from her, leaving her to try and find out why.

I love that while this book is deemed as New Adult the author doesn’t exactly rave about sex in the book, really she kind of shadows it for the readers, leaving us the kind of think for ourselves about what will happen or what actually happened. It gave me a sense of wondering and knowing, weird I know but it did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay Read. May 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I’m just not sure how I feel about this book. Did I like it? Well, I liked the idea of it. I liked some of the characters. I liked some of the story line. The other parts that I didn't like, I didn't dislike. They just fell flat for me and underdeveloped. Maggie is the twenty year old daughter of country music stars. All she wants to do is sing. But she can’t sing, not well anyways. The idea behind it was entertaining; I thought the focus would be on her journey of her dream. It was not, not completely. There were so many other things going on in this book; the drama with her parents, then Cole's secrets. There were things that just didn't make a lot of sense to me or seemed unnecessary, as if to only add drama. I would have preferred less drama and instead that some of the twists and ideas were better developed. I did really like how the story ended up playing out and how we saw Maggie’s dream change.
