This review is from: Out of the Valley: Memoirs of an Australian Childhood (Paperback)
I am always looking for true stories about growing up in Australia's outback, mainly because they are so very different from my own upbringing in California suburbia. I have read several memoirs of the outback because of their enriching qualities, and this is not such a rough-and-tumble story as most of them are. Rosemary Lloyd loved her large family, loved the land and the various animals, loved her high school and college years, and has become a reknown French translator and writer. She was always very a literate girl, and so was I, so I really enjoyed her excursions off the outback and into the classrooms. The book is very readable and enjoyable and it is nice to read about a childhood that wasn't fraught with danger and the elements, drunken fathers, etc. So I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about people having totally different experiences from themselves; it is inspiring, and fun to read.
