File under amusing diversions (but "Scarface" is a gem),
By Andrew Miller (Kansas City, MO) - See all my reviews

Corin Tucker's sideproject Cadallaca is much more than a teaser to tide over rabid S-K fans during the brief intervals between its releases. Although this album's Out West theme holds only for its cover art and its title-track, a masterful murder ballad that brings to mind P.J. Harvey at her spookiest, the rest of the selections maintain the high level of quality if not the coherency of the concept. On "The Trouble with Public Places," Tucker's trademark powder-keg vocals blast over a punchy rock backdrop peppered with melodic organ segments. The record's catchiest tune, "Scarface," again uses organs with dazzling success, especially when all the other elements disappear during the stripped-down ending reprise of the chorus this isn't my real face, baby/it's just a scar. Emotional and irresistable, Out West proves that Cadallaca deserves the same accolades that are heaped upon Tucker's day-job outfit.

really good!,
By Gerard Mulligan (Nutley, NJ USA) - See all my reviews

the music itself is really great on this, i would probably say its better than cadallaca's full-length. the songs are all really catchy and have plenty of corin. from what i can make out of the lyrics, they dont seem all that wonderful. but i would probably buy this just for the music itself, especially 'scarface'. although the theme seems a bit gimmick-y.its pretty different from sleater-kinney, but since corin is pretty much in control of this, sleater-kinney fans would probably like it.

Way Out West,
By A Customer
This review is from: Out West (Audio CD)
I heard an MP3 of "The Trouble With Public Places," the third song on this EP, which prompted me to buy the entire EP. I wish I hadn't. It's not that "Out West" is horrible or anything, it's just a bit overdone. Guitar and drums mixed with an organ is a unique combination that, unfortunately, makes most of the songs sound childish and carnival-like - not what I was expecting from members of Sleater-Kinney and The Haggard. If you liked Cadallaca's first album, though, you'll probably find this a tolerable listen as well. The cover doesn't include lyrics, though, but it does have some funny/sexy pictures of the band members dressed in satirical 'wild west' attire. (Sarah Dougher in a corset!) If you're a fan, buy it.
