Review

"Like so many New Yorkers, Halaban can’t help staring into her
neighbors’ windows, but she’s made an art of it. Most of her big color
photographs are views across streets, alleyways, or airshafts into
apartments. A man plays with his dog; a young couple cuddle with their
baby; the solitary stand in Hopperesque isolation. The fact that
Halaban has staged these moments doesn’t make them any less resonant
of the contradictory impulses of metropolitan life: the desire to
connect and the need to be left alone. Voyeurs will be frustrated by
Halaban’s polite scenarios, but she’s playing the good neighbor."
- Vince Aletti, The New Yorker

I saw an article about this book of photographs a couple months prior to its publication and had been waiting eagerly to see the full project. I was not disappointed, but rather delighted to see page after page of beautiful photos that capture right and play to my NYC memories of innocent voyeurism. Growing up there, I always felt intrigued by the proximity of so many lives unfolding all around me--the secret lives behind windows and doors, some across from my own 17-story apartment building. Granted, my response to this collection is extremely personal and largely nostalgic (I've been on the west coast for twenty years), but I would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes good, urban, color photography and appreciates the very subtle (and, it should be noted, sex-less) titillation of watching people who know themselves to be on view in their private spaces. The fact that they know does take a certain bite out of the voyeurism but adds back an interesting quality of its own.

I expected a little more than what the book shows. Probably, for the fact that I had read a suspitious review in a newspaper, I had an expectation that the book might also show the technics and presets the photografer used when taking those photos. So, as an introduction to the work of Mrs. Gail Halaban, the book fulfills its purpose.

"Out My Window" by Gail Albert Halaban is a beautiful book of photographs
portraying an intimate side of New York that few outsiders get to see:
a city of great luxury as well as one with people of modest circumstance;
a city of the very young and old and those in between, and the lonely and
the social. The colors and the lights of the city are beautifully presented.

Anyone who loves New York as well as those interested in fine art photography
will enjoy this book.
