5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality
I've just recently received this coat, however it's already struck me as long-lasting and effective, and still looks good.

For years, the Outback Trading Company's oilskin dusters were the equal of Schaefer's, and were nearly as good as the Barbour equivalents -- at a quarter of the Barbour price.

For years, the Outback Trading Company's oilskin dusters were the equal of Schaefer's, and were nearly as good as the Barbour equivalents -- at a quarter of the Barbour price.

Regrettably, this is no longer true. The coat, which used to be cut from 12 oz. canvas, is now constructed with 10 oz. canvas. The stitching and tailoring display nothing like the craftsmanship they once did. One experiences a sense of flimsiness when handling the coat, as opposed to the stiff-as-a-doormat feel true oilskin should provide when it's new. It's just not the same high-quality garment it was until now.

If you're lucky, you might find one of these coats from Outback's old stock. If you're unlucky, you'll get one of the newly manufactured ones, which are made -- can you guess? -- in China.

These dusters forever, we've had the short version for 15 years and it still looks good. Works great for rain, snow, wind whatever is out there. Lasted through 12 Wyoming winters and the long version will probably last just as long. Great price too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great deal indeed, February 11, 2008
Sturdy, long oilskin duster, great for cross-country riding, rain doesn't get in and thorns are no problem.

I found the spring buttons much better than a long zipper: it opens up under stress and does not tear.

I've used it for just two weeks, but it looks like it would last forever.

Very good value for money.

Just wore this in an Oregon downpour for about 45 minutes on a walk in the woods. It worked great and I was not wet at all underneath. It is also far more breathable than rubber rain gear or jackets with a waterproof coating (other than say gore-tex). But a gore-tex jacket would never survive in the conditions this one has in the short couple of weeks I have had it. It has withstood firewood cutting & hauling, brush, thorns, rain, freezing rain, snow, etc and I am happy.

It was perfect for my cowboy Halloween costume. I think I can reuse it for some others too. I would feel like a cowboy poser wearing it around town though. But if it's raining really hard it would be great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved The Coat, February 17, 2010

Exactly what I wanted for a riding coat. Keeps me nice and dry if it starts to rain. Much better value than the local stores that charged twice as much for the exact same coat. Glad I shopped here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Longest lasting piece of apparel I've owned., January 4, 2009

I've put my Outback Oilskin Duster through 20 years of hard western mountain riding - through snow, rain and hail and it's never let me down. I won't leave the barn without it - rolled up and tied behind my saddle. Best money I've ever spent - here to get one for my wife.

This duster is well-designed for outside work and for horse-back riding. Great for a wrangler. It holds up well, and even looks great on both men and women.
