5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down
After reading some reviews of this book, I took a chance of reading Stuart Thorogood's book. I got hooked after the first couple of pages. This is the story of Mark and how he came out to his family and friends. The story line was gripping and moving at every page. It was an easy read, and one could finish it in one sitting. This book was so good, i already bought...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coming out story
Stuart Thorogood's story about 20-year old Mark's coming out was a very good (but short) read. The cast of characters are really likeable, and I found Mark's narrative pretty believable. The only thing I disliked about the book is in the second part, Mr. Thorogood's tries to describe the situation in various people's point of view, and I don't think he really succeeded...

4.0 out of 5 stars Come out, come out, November 5, 1999

If you enjoyed the movies "Beautiful Thing" and "Get Real", you will certainly enjoy this coming out story. It's humorous, witty, moving, everything a well-written story ought to be. Now why is it so short?

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, April 18, 2000
This review is from: Outcast (Paperback)
A beautiful book! I loved it! Ate it up! It's the best coming out story that i have ever read. In a succinct way, Thorogood manages to make his readers feel so many of the emotions that are common to all gay people: the fear of coming out, the hurt that comes from rejection, the joy of first love, and more.

I only hope that Gay Men's Press has the good sense to persuade Thorogood to write a sequel. I would love to see how Mark and Andrew end up.

The only thing I disliked about the book is in the second part, Mr. Thorogood's tries to describe the situation in various people's point of view, and I don't think he really succeeded. They all sounded like the same people! In any case, this is a good first novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Coming Out Story, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Outcast (Paperback)
Stuart Thorogood has put together a fast paced modern story about coming out in working class London. I was most impressed with his excellent ear for dialogue. The streets and attitudes of London come alive in these pages. I found myself not able to put it down. This is not your typical mushy love story. It is a story about the search for an identity. A great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Griipping and Heartfelt, August 16, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Outcast (Paperback)
I have just finished Outcast and Outside In the sequel in 2 days between work.
I could not believe that Outcast is Stuart's first novel because the story is just too well written to be any writer's first.
Stuart writes from his heart, each sentence heart felt with no holding back. It's just so easy to flow with the story and to feel for Mark as he endures confusion, suffering, rejection and pain as a result of coming out to his friend and family. But at the end there is hope as Mark finds love with Andrew, which is a great bridge to "Outside In", the sequel. Stuart, you are a gifted writer and I have enjoyed reading Outcast.
