5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and delicious recipes
Minium campsite cooking impact information was useful and directions very clear and simple. There is no magic required to use the Dutch oven just a few Kingsford brand briquettes. 3.0 out of 5 stars Yummy ideas, but missing instructions

3.0 out of 5 stars Yummy ideas, but missing instructions, October 5, 2004
In preparation for a trip to Death Valley for Thanksgiving, I am wading through a number of "D.O." cookbooks. This book has the best recipes by far, as noted by others here, but it doesn't include instructions on how to cook with a D.O. -- i.e. how many briquets to use, where to place them, how to adjust the temperature. Perhaps a lot of "seasoned" river runners like the authors have been doing it so long they assume everyone knows how, but a basic book should include basic instructions. If you're needing that info, check out "Lovin' Dutch Ovens," by Joan S. Larsen. The recipes are more Betty Crocker-ish (and in some cases frightening), but the instructions go over sizes, quantities and temperature control -- a must for most people in the market for a D.O. book. Oh and, BTW, once you know how to cook in a D.O., the reality is you can pretty much cook any of your favorite recipes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't really tell you how to cook with a Dutch oven..., June 9, 1999
By A Customer
I was disappointed in "The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook." I purchased this book looking for information on cooking with Dutch ovens. What I got was a book with some interesting recipes (quite a few that are not made with a Dutch oven!) that was very vague about cooking techniques. There is a section on the differences in cast iron and aluminum Dutch ovens and some info on the various ways you can use them, but nothing on the actual techniques. After reading the book, I have the same questions I started with! Instead of the oddly random general camping information ("catch & release" fishing, human waste disposal, etc.) I would've much preferred some nitty-gritty info on how to use a Dutch oven.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great receipes, assumes basic skill however, September 28, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen. I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, versatile recipes for home and camping., October 31, 1999
By A Customer
We have used this cookbook at home using our conventional oven as well as in our backyard and on camping trips. The recipes are fairly easy and there is a a good variety to choose from. My kids have even tried some of the desserts and breads. The instructions are straight forward and simple.

All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive). I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

Fantastic recipies it this book! A little short on instruction for the beginner and a bit long on environmental lectures. Great book for liberal Democrats that don't think protecting the wild applies to them. Broad range of culinary styles. Well written and worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Camp cooking at its best, September 30, 2004
I've looked at a lot of Dutch oven cookbooks, and this is the best one yet. It includes recipes, information and ideas I've not seen anywhere else. I especially liked that Ms. Mills includes directions for conventional oven use. While some of the recipes may be more complicated than some camp cooks want to tackle, there is something for everyone here.
I've tried several of the recipes and featured one, Witches' Brew, in my recipe column. Well worth the money.I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to elevate their camp cooking (or home cooking!) from hamburgers and a can of beans to a meal to remember.

This review is from: The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook, Second Edition (Paperback)
'Roughing it' in the great out of doors does not have to exclude great eating! That's the implied message reflected by the 225 creative, original, and 'camp cook friendly' recipes comprising Sheila Mills' "The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook". A 'Dutch Oven' is basically a cooking pot with legs and a snug-fitting lid that is suspended over a camp fire. Drawing upon her more than 30 years as head chef and co-owner of Rocky Mountain River Tours, Sheila Mills has compiled superb Dutch Oven recipes for baking breads, preparing breakfast dishes, appetizers and snacks, both meat and meatless main dishes, and even some particularly wonderful desserts. The recipes range from a Posh Potato and Sausage Breakfast; to a Turkey and Brown Rice Casserole, to a Spicy Pesto Lasagna; to an elegant Yogurt Chocolate Cake. These gourmet quality recipes will satisfy an appetite and please any palate, making "The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook" an ideal addition to personal and community library cookbook collections.
