Outdoor Research PL 400 Gloves
Outdoor Research Apparel and Gear
Outdoor Research designs and builds the most bombproof climbing, skiing and mountaineering apparel and gear in the world. And because of that, alpine climbers and ski mountaineers have relied on our gear to keep them shielded from the elements since the introduction of the X-Gaiter in 1981. By gathering product feedback from an amazingly talented – and opinionated – team of ambassadors, and by integrating the lessons we’ve learned from the customers in our Lab Rat gear test program, we’re proud to make some of the most breathable, comfortable, protective and functional outdoor apparel and gear and in the world. And on top of that, we think it looks pretty damn good.

When I want to use them for use in very cold weather, I wear them with a liner or a thicker glove shell on top.

Driving - perfect - the grip additions on the palm help with really cold steering wheels where chopper/mitt type gloves can slip.

I've ordered those gloves for my husband and quality is nice and they fit true to size and look very good like casual gloves.

I have been using OR products for a long, long time, and the quality of their gear is excellent, and designs well executed. The PL 400 gloves are no exception. When someone came up with the term, "Fits like a glove", they must of have been wearing the PL 400s.

I tried on a number of different styles at my local outdoor specialty shop, and these gloves really felt like they were custom designed for my hand. Now, I've been a North Face fan ever since they were making their Sierra A-frame tents, and I sold outdoor gear for nearly four years when I was younger, and picked up one of North Face's first geodesic dome tents using their pro-plan discount, and I DO own lots of NF gear. I figured the NF glove line would probably have a design that suited my needs, and I seriously considered the Apex insulated model, which was more expensive, and a little more glove for the money with a nylon shell. But they just didn't seem to fit right, and their design, with the seam around the butt of the thumb, would put a substantail amount of stress on an area of the hand that sees a lot of abuse. The OR glove runs the seams along the side of the thumb, and there is no seam at all around the butt of the thumb - just fabric. So from a design standpoint, this is clearly a stronger design. I also noticed that the wrists seemed to be slighly smaller than the body of the glove on the PL 400s, and this also contributes to a feeling of the glove fitting "just right". It wasn't until later that I actually read the card they were attached to and discovered OR specifically designed the glove in this manner so it would fit the hand better. So as I compared both gloves in the store, I took off the NF Apex and slid my hand into the PL 400s again.

great tactile feel and ideal for above 20 degrees. Below 20 degrees I would recommed a thicker more insulated glove. Grip on fingers have not fallen off and are still tacky after 2 months of use.

I used these for skiing but had to wear another glove over them to keep my hands warm. They were advertised as gloves or liners but really the latter is more accurate.

I really like these gloves. I got them last fall and they've been completely worth it. They're perfect for football games late in the season, bike riding, and I think most of all, for winter mornings so you don't have to deal with that freezing cold steering wheel all the time.

As for the grips, a thin layer does fall off but what's left still works a little. I personally don't experience much of a difference without them. I got them to keep my hands warm and they're very good at it. If a really good grip is something you can't live without though, try something else, that's really not what these are for anyway.

I am currently deployed in northern Afghanistan and the winter here vary from plus 10 celcius to minus 15 celcius... I find these glove to fit this dry cold perfectly and the dexterity it provides still allow me to do my day to day functions including shooting, reloading and etc... it offers great warmth on days just standing in the elements and the rubber on the palm and finger tips provides the needed grip. Awesome glove!!

I know I am a lady writing a review on a man's glove. I have long slender hands, to long for most womens gloves. I also run marathons and have raynaud's syndrome(which is when your blood vessels contract alot more than a normal person, when your hands get cold...they get very cold, numb and then turn blue) With the above criteria I was looking for a slim glove that would work. These fit the bill. They are warm, not to warm though for running or any other vigorous activity. Would I recommend them for my husband who is outside all winter...no. Not warm enough for that. But they work for me very nicely. If your looking for a glove to quickly do something outside...bring in the wood, pump gas, or other chore that would last about an hour or two...these do nicely. Any longer, go find another glove.

These are warm. But. The silicone pads are super tacky - they don't provide grip so much as stick. That'd be fine if they lasted. But after less than a week of wear, the pads on half the fingers are ripping off.

Avoid.

I ordered a large and was a bit surprised by the tightness of these gloves though it was not so bad that I'd send them back. My hand is about 8" from the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger. It'd be nice if this were required information for this type of product on Amazon. Oh well. Aside from the size, they seem nice. They kept my hands warm while I was riding my bike for 15 minutes in 32 degree weather. Definitely easy to get on and off. I don't think they'll do much to keep out moisture though I didn't actually make any snow balls. Now, let's see how they hold up...
