I lead backcountry trips in Western NC where it rains A LOT. I ordered the Foray jacket from Prime a few days before I left out on a backcountry trip and had someone deliver it to me on our first resupply. I literally put the un-opened jacket in a canoe, paddled to our campsite on Lake Nantahalla and just waited for the inevitable rain. Within 10 minutes of first trying on the jacket, we were caught in a thunderstorm with 3 second close lightning (flash to boom time).

I then spent 30 minutes in lightning position discovering all the neat features of the jacket.

The brim on the hood is a nice addition to keep rain off your face, but the adjustment pull tab in the back is a little awkward to adjust.

The full length side vent zippers are a great touch especially when the temperature is up around 90. The jacket can open up like a poncho which I like very much because the jacket definitely gets warm in 90' temps.

I only give the jacket 4 stars because it is slightly bulky and the cord lock on the hood is awkward. I prefer my clothing to be slim fit and this jacket is not at all slim fit. But for the price here on prime for a Gore-Tex Paclite jacket it is a great value. The gore-tex will last for years unlike my other DWR finish jackets that have not withstood the Western NC rainforest.

The jacket also packs up into its own pocket which is very useful when carrying it in a backpack.

This shell is awesome. I had purchased a TAD Gear Ranger Hoody which is constructed of less-than-weather-proof fleece and didnt want to shell out $450 for their companion hardshell (which is really just a ruggedized softshell anyways) so i was in the market for hardshells and did a TON of research. I decided on this for several reasons:

1. First and foremost, Outdoor Research is one of the few outdoor gear companies to retain their full, no questions asked, unlimited lifetime warranty. If this thing ever delaminates, the zippers break, or anything like that they will repair/replace it no questions asked. A warranty like this used to be common but as performance brands are becoming more and more fashionable and reasonably priced, brands (like Marmot, REI, The North Face, Mammut, and many more) are dropping this system.

2. My second reason for this purchase is goretex. I could have picked a lighter, more reasonably priced shell from a manufacturer using their proprietary membranes that are getting so popular now, but knowing this is goretex means it wont break down and decay, wont delaminate, and wont have any coating wear off like other less proven membranes may. I know there are probably materials out there that would have satisfied my needs, but goretex has a proven track record, so i dont mind paying for a slightly heavier and bulkier shell when it means i wont need a new one in 4 years.

3. Third, this jacket features TorsoFlo, a feature that is not exclusive to OR. The reason i need TorsoFlo i because i bought this to accompany my TAD hoodie, so i wanted quick access to the numerous pockets on the hoodie.

Just got my OR Foray Jacket, in Diablo color, today. I tried on a few shells at REI this past weekend and liked many of them. I was looking for a lightweight waterproof shell for boating in Florida. Something I could throw on in a shower that would keep me dry, but not cause me to be drenched in sweat by the time the shower passed. Max ventilation is a priority in FL, since even the "breathable" materials do not truly "breathe" in our humidity and heat. I also wanted to be able to layer under it for some of my colder offshore adventures during Winter.

After trying on quite a few jackets, the Patagonia Torrentshell and the Marmot Precip were two of my favorite non-Gortex jackets. Until I tried on Marmot's Minimalist Jacket (with Paclite Gor-Tex). It was almost twice the price of the other two jackets, but I found I was willing to pay the difference for the Gore-Tex material. Gore-tex just seemed to me to be more pliable and soft than the "crinkly" non-Gore-Tex materials. So I set out to find the lightest and cheapest Paclite Gore-Tex shell on the market. That landed me on this "Diablo" colored OR Foray.

The Foray arrived on time, and I love the jacket. I ordered a small (I'm 5'8, 150 lbs) and it fits perfectly, with a little room for under layers. The hood, with both front and back adjustments, fits perfectly and is much more comfortable than any other hood I've tried. It maintains peripheral vision and does not restrict mobility. The materials are top notch and the seams look flawless. The front pockets are more than big enough for my purposes. Best of all, the ventilation from the full side pit zips is amazing. If you live in a warm humid environment, I couldn't imagine a better shell.

At 6' I wasn't sure how a size L would fit (especially around the chest), but tried it on the other day when I went snowshoeing with a thin layer hoodie underneath and was surprised at how comfortable I still was. It was blowing snow and kept me warm the whole trip. Love the side zippers that turns the jacket into a poncho. Great way to cool off without having to take the jacket off. Two thumbs up OR!
