This hat arrived and was very lightweight and thin and I thought, "well, here we go, time to find another hat." But I have worn it a few times in the wind and cold rain and it keeps my head surprisingly warm and dry. It isn't cozy or snuggly, but the heat from your head stays absolutely inside without adding any extra warmth you get from snuggly, cozy hats. If you are sitting on your porch enjoying hot cocoa, this might not be the hat for you, but if you are moving around it is absolutely perfect.

I was looking for a wind-proof hat for those winter days when walking or waiting for the bus can get painfully cold. I wanted something I could keep in my bag all the time "just in case."
This Peruvian hat was well reviewed and it lives up to those other reviews. Very comfortable and toasty. Ears and neck are covered. Keeps the chilly wind out.

Bonuses for my purpose: Rolls up into a tiny little package I keep tucked in the corner of my bag. Very lightweight.

Combine it with Columbia Sportswear Bugascarf and you're ready for those sub-zero days.

This hat is very warm, yet is made of a very lightweight material, and can be easily folded to fit into a coat pocket.

After a couple weeks of use, I'm giving the OR Peruvian a thumbs up.

Using a quick example, the Windstop worked great yesterday on a three-hour backcountry ski jaunt up the hills. The wind pounded in the tree clearings and I felt nothing but warmth. Even with heavy perspiration in parts of the trek, it seemed to breathe well also. Naturally, it is can bit hard to hear your buddies and their chit chat with the ears covered, but that's getting picky.

The medium fit me well, but I would try and check sizing in person if you can as it is a trim fit unlike the knitted Peruvian caps you can grab. Sometimes I wear a nylon Nike DriFit running cap underneath and the OR cap fits comfortably but doesn't feel tight or too snug. The straps, I found to be superfluous.

A few people mentioned it looks goofy. I don't know, maybe it does. It doesn't scramble eggs or cook bacon either. I didn't pick up any girls out in the hills with this thing - but it does protect my ears well. That's what I bought it for.

I wanted a thin winter hat that would block the wind, keep my head warm in cold weather, and fold compactly enough to store in a jacket pocket. This hat does the trick. Here is why I like it.

1. I have collected my fair share of winter hats over the years for skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, running and just everyday use. Outdoor Research makes quality products, and this hat is one of them. It is well constructed and made of good quality material. I do recommend sizing up unless you like a really snug fit since this hat runs a bit small.

2. This does not feel quite as warm as my wool ski hats or thicker fleece hats--but this is more lightweight, and quite frankly is warm enough, especially if you are doing aerobic activities. Also, in really severe winter conditions (e.g blizzard, icestorm, etc.) I generally wear a jacket with a hood anyhow, and like to wear a thin hat like this (or else a balaclava) for extra protection, so I don't need anything warmer.

3. This goes on and off easily, and covers my forehead and ears. No worries about the hat "riding up" and exposing the lower part of your ears, as sometimes happens with other hats I own. And if you buy the model with the drawstring, there is no way the hat will move out of position.

4. As another review notes, stylistically this hat looks like an old fashioned leather football helmet. True, but lots of people wear this style winter hat, and whether or not you like that look is a matter of personal preference.

Bottom line: For a thin, lightweight, effective winter hat I like this product.

I purchased this hat for my husband, who's head circumference is larger than "average". The large fits perfectly and does not look silly on him. The fabric is incredibly warm, yet very lightweight & definitely windproof.

Be careful as there are two different items pictured. (with and without chin straps) I thought I was buying a decent-looking Peruvian Hat with ear flaps with a slightly rounded fuller dome. The black one with no chin straps. I received a black one but the item is the coyote-color version. (from the pictures). It's not round and full and has these elastic chin straps. Maybe I'm the fool for not realizing a Peruvian hat wouldn't have chin straps.

As far as fit goes, I have a large head and most micro fleece caps don't cover my ears completely. That's why I purchased this item. I will say though that if you purchase the large, it should fit a large head nicely. But the inside of the cap is kind of rough. At least rough for a guy with thinning hair that keeps it cut very short. The inside isn't micro-fleece. It feels almost like some kind of foam. The inside seams in my other fleece caps are stitched down smooth where you can't feel them on your scalp. The inside seams in this one stick out quite a bit. Nearly 1/4" or 4-5 mm. It was quite uncomfortable.

The elastic chin strap is probably effective in blistering cold winds, but it was also pretty uncomfortable.

Thank you Amazon for having such a painless return process.
