Product Description

Function lies at the heart of this street-styled Radar Pocket Cap. It shields you from the sun with UPF 30 protection, keeps you dry with the TransAction headband, and stores away in your pocket with the help of the folding bill. It's a good thing this comes in many colors-you'll want more than one.

The fit is true to size.

I like it because it is lightweight and it folds up easily if I want to take it off and put it in your pocket.

Plus they are very comfortable, fitting well, and having a good look to them.

The XL fits my watermelon sized (61cm) noggin loosely enough to slip three fingers under the brim. That's rare and good. The sides are nice and deep, similar to the Korean war style fatigue caps and so it sinks down until it sits on right on my ears. I like that.

It's pretty light (56g). It's nicely made. Although it has "Outdoor OR Research" embroidered obnoxiously and non-removably on the left front side it's not nearly as offensive and hideous as the huge "OR" that Outdoor Research usually plasters it's hats with. There is another "Outdoor Research" label sewn to the outside rear of the hat; this is (and will be) easily removed. If OR is going to charge me to advertise for them they could have at least stitched this rear label in such a way as to make it useful for hanging a small strobe light or turkey feather.

The folding brim works well; the brim is reinforced with stiff, curved inserts of perhaps plastic but possibly cardboard. Fits folded in a hip pocket comfortably. There's a 10cm cord loop stitched to the inside rear crown. I don't really know why it's in that particular location as it seems an awkward spot from which to either hang or tie town the hat. The 4cm exterior band is double fabric and appropriately stiffened, perhaps with facing or scrim, to give body. This is good as the rest of the cap fabric is rather soft and shapeless. The 4cm interior band is a black, soft and absorbent thin fleece. The bands together are somewhat warm but they do move moisture well and keep sweat off the face.

Here's the problem. The body of the cap, both sides and crown, are made from a double layer of Supplex-like nylon. I have no doubt it blocks sunlight at the proclaimed (and embroidered) 30SPF rate. However, it doesn't breath well at all.

I'll preface this by saying I am a big Outdoor Research fan. From their softshells, to mittens, I've liked everything I've bought from them. Good quality, good fit (i.e. not boxy), and lifetime guarantee all add up to repeat purchases on my part.

My wife and I both have this hat. She has two of them in Medium, and I wear a Large. I've got a big head, and I was surprised at how big the Large is. I ordered both a L and XL and returned the XL as it looked like I was a little kid wearing my father's hat.

As others have mentioned, the biggest plus is how easy it is to carry this thing and how versatile it is. I always toss it in my backpack while hiking, I wear it while running errands on Sundays, and I always toss it in my back when travelling. I tend to avoid it in the dead of summer as the synthetic material, while thin, doesn't breathe all that well. Conversely, it's not warm enough to wear as a hat in the winter. Its really best suited for fall and spring.

I've found myself using it most when I travel. Its light and packs easy, and doesn't look goofy. My wife brought one to Peru and basically lived in it for 2 weeks through all kinds of weather. It blocks the sun (as it's got an spf30 rating), fit the part of a backpacker, and was easily stowable in any just about any pocket.

To recap:
Pros - Versatility, looks good, brim doesn't look like it folds while wearing it (it stays rouned), dries quickly, ideal for travel.

Cons - Its really only suited for the shoulder seasons. If you want a warm weather version, opt for the one with the little mesh vent panels on the sides. Same hat, just better breathability.

I am OR hats fan and I have three of them but I am surprised at their quality control. I have noticed their sizes are very off and random! I ordered L but it was too snug. I than ordered XL and wow it was so big! I figured the difference in size was too great and maybe the L I got was not good large so I ordered another large. This time it was slightly smaller than XL but still big enough for my liking. The hat is great but if you are lucky enough to get the right size. Two points off for such poor quality control.

One of the best hats I have ever purchased. Sizing is good for me, as I have a large head (7 7/8) and most "one size fits all" hats are hopelessly to small. Fabric is very high quality, wicks well. Folding bill seemed odd, but actually works very well so the hat folds into a pocket nicely. Add the loop for hanging, and roomy shape so you stay warm, and this is a terrific product. I own three of them (green, beige, and black) and wear them all the time. A bit hot for hiking in Summer would be my only complaint...

I really like this cap. The short, folding bill makes it easy enough to throw in a cargo-pant pocket or even in the pouch under my bike seat. When I take it out of wherever I've stuffed it, it always looks good. Size wise, this medium is true to most guides. I wear a 7-1/8 fitted hat, and my head measures 22-1/2 inches around. I did have the opportunity to try on a small and a large prior to ordering this, so I was more confident the medium would fit as these two sizes did not. If you are the kind of person whose hair looks like it fought for eight hours while you slept after only being under a helmet for five minutes, then having a portable cap like this handy is almost a must have.
