The fold down ear muffs really come in handy when the wind starts to blow a chill.

Ill make this short and sweet. If your looking for a rain hat then get a Seattle Sombrero and if your looking for a rain hat for colder conditions then get the Snoqualmie, period. The Snoqualmie is basically a Seattle Sombrero with ear flaps. Not only are they extremely comfortable, they are also practically indestructible. I purchased my first Seattle Sombrero back in the early 90's and my first Snoqualmie back in 2002 and I still have both and they are still in great shape. You can literally crumble these up into a ball and shove them in your pocket. That is because they are basically made of nothing but Gor-Tex and a soft liner. You can roll it up, crumble it up, bend it any way you want and it will immediately go right back to its original form. Of course all of this would be meaningless if it didn't keep you dry and fortunately these things perform flawlessly in this regard. Whether your out in a downpour or whitewater rafting, if you have a Seattle Sombrero on your head then your head is going to stay dry. If you have a Snoqualmie on your head then your head is going to stay warm and dry. The rope assures it wont fall of your head when you need them the most. I have used them storm chasing in 60 mile per hour winds and so long as the rope is tightened, this hat isn't going anywhere. The Seattle Sombrero is the model that the entire industry tries to mimic and its really what put Outdoor Research on the map in regards to outdoor equipment. Its basically legendary in the outdoor equipment world. The Snoqualmie is the latest iteration of that design.

The bottom line - There simply is no substitute for these hats. If you want the best then the Seattle Sombrero and the Snoqualmie are what your looking for.

5 Stars and then some!

Have owned a number of goretex rain hats (usually until I lose them) but this is the one I would re-purchase if I ever lost it.

All season, comfortable in summer or winter.
The fold down ear muffs really come in handy when the wind starts to blow a chill.
Well made, Good fit, comfortable on head, chin strap keeps it on in the wind.

Folds nicely into packet, jacket or pack.

This hat is great! Kept me dry on a 15 mile hike in a steady rain. It was warm enough without being too hot and the chin strap kept it from blowing off. Friends even said it looked chic. It doesn't weigh much and can fold or crumple up to fit in your pocket or pack if the weather clears up.

I got this hat because of the built in ear flaps to wear while walking my dogs in the wet and windy elements of the Pacific Northwest. I based the size on that of my Seattle Sombrero (medium), which fits great. The Snoqualmie in that size is tight when the flaps are folded up inside the crown, and when the flaps are down, they're isn't enough material to cover my ears and the elastic hemline rises it up further, renderring the hat uncomfortable as well as not keeping my ears warm. It does keep my head dry, though...so I guess I'll keep it as a spare and stick with my Seattle hat and a pair of earmuffs. Kinda dissappointing considering the cost.

Contrary to reviewers who say the hat immediately returns to its original shape (as in the picture) upon removal from a crushed state, it does not. Due to the very flexible brim, this hat looks very funny right out of the box as it has been folded flat for shipping. It does not look like a sombrero but looks much like an outback hat with its curved up brim on the sides.

If the brim could be shaped better after being crushed, this would be a five star hat. Still, it does ok after some fussing with it.

My head circumference is 23" and the size Large fits very well flaps down or up. No I am not taking off.

The brim is only about 2 1/2" (OR says 3")in front which is a little small but when the hat is pulled down in front, it keeps the rain off your glasses if you keep your head down a bit but your mouth and neck get spray if you are headed into the wind. The rear brim dimension is approximately four inches.

I rode 20 miles in the rain at 55 degrees F. and 20 m.p.h. to test this hat on January 5th. Eat your heart out Minnesota. The hat performed as advertised on the way up to the Eastern Continental Divide at 10 m.p.h.. Prior to the rain the Snoqualmie was too warm but it is so light that I just threw it behind me with no discomfort as the rain jacket had a high collar.

On the way back down I reached speeds of 20 m.p.h.. The forward brim fluttered a little and if I looked straight ahead would flip up and the rain splattered my face and glasses. The Outdoor Research Men's Force 9 Sombrero is better for wind but has no ear flaps although it is Gore-Tex. It is overpriced right now on Amazon but they are available elsewhere for $40 in some sizes/colors.

Had to give this excellent hat a two star rating because of the crease in the brim. Just got it today and now I need to return it.. It really isn't that bad but for such an expensive hat, this type of quality control can't be over looked. This is a 5 star hat though! I want to keep it for years and years, but I'm not going to look and that crease in the brim every time I put it on.
