3.0 out of 5 stars Great photos and ideas
This book is a practical guide to putting in an outdoor shower. I would've liked more photos of what people have done to create great outdoor shower spaces- the book seems to mostly focus on Martha's Vineyard- but this book has some good advice on plumbing from the house, drainage, and partitions. It is a good place to start if putting in an outdoor shower, but I found...

Lovely color photos of such showers run the gamut from very simple to amazingly detailed, while choices in heating from solar to convention and choices in design offer details for virtually any setting, whether it be stone, wood, metal or tile. A fine pick for any who would restore function to an outside setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome & Inspiring, July 14, 2006
The Outdoor Shower book gave me the confidence to build my own outdoor shower. It also inspired me to get creative with my design. The book is rich with technical information, packed with great photos, and full of plumbing fixture ideas and more. Ethan has done a fantastic job at filling a void.

I would've liked more photos of what people have done to create great outdoor shower spaces- the book seems to mostly focus on Martha's Vineyard- but this book has some good advice on plumbing from the house, drainage, and partitions. It is a good place to start if putting in an outdoor shower, but I found the internet and my local guys at Home Depot to be better resources for some things.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over zealous, July 26, 2008
This review is from: The Outdoor Shower: Creative design ideas for backyard living, from the functional to the fantastic (Paperback)
The book has some interesting ideas and nice pictures, but it really comes up short in planning and building an outdoor shower. Eventually I did it myself and, by the way, there were some plumbing errors that should be pointed out to the author, specifically there are two kinds of PVC pipe, one for hot and cold and one just for cold water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertained, May 21, 2007
This review is from: The Outdoor Shower: Creative design ideas for backyard living, from the functional to the fantastic (Paperback)
This book was clearly written and the author did a fine job of researching the topic of outdoor showers. the drawings and the sidebar tips were well done. the multitude of options for individual tastes of showers were well explained. the author obviously not only enjoys the art of designing the shower, but has the knowledge and talent to construct one also, which in turn helps the readers confindence in building his or her own. i would recomend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoor experience of showering.

The Outdoor Shower book had such beautiful pictures and so many creative designs that I can't decide what I want to build! We are gleaning from many of the ideas to come up with the perfect outdoor shower. I can't wait for it to be finished!

1.0 out of 5 stars Plan on singing in the shower alfresco? Not with this DUD., July 6, 2008
This review is from: The Outdoor Shower: Creative design ideas for backyard living, from the functional to the fantastic (Paperback)
SAVE YOUR $$$ and skip purchasing 'THE OUTDOOR SHOWER'. I bought and then returned this book as I found it to be lacking in fresh, new ideas on the subject of choosing and installing an outdoor shower. The text was blah and un-engaging and the all-important photo-illustrations were badly shot and not at all inspirational. I purchased this book thinking it would give me an overview of styles/periods/designs from which I might be inspired to install my own outdoor shower. Instead, what I found were amateurish, candid photos that were mundane, souless and frankly BORING. Avoid this book and head instead to your local newstand or library to find imaginative ideas in the shelter magazines: Coastal Living-MS Living-Yankee-Sunset all have featured pieces on this topic with a fresh outdoor lifestyle slant. This book was a dud with a capital D.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Book, But...., July 9, 2011

I purchased this book with the hopes of giving me a few ideas on an outdoor shower enclosure. The book has exactly what is said it had, enclosure ideas. Fortunately I have carpentry skills. Most of (but not all) of the enclosure examples are advanced in regard to handyman projects. It did help me with the design of my project. If you have any imagination and can draw your ideas on paper, you may not need this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book to get your ideas flowing but by no means a how-to., April 16, 2011

The design ideas in the book certainly are enough to light a fire in those who enjoy doing their own construction/renovation. There are numerous pictures showing the range of complexity that can be found in outdoor showers. It does give a good general overview on topics like design, planning, integration with existing structures, plumbing, local building codes and drainage. But sadly that's about all the book is: a general overview. Their really isn't any sort of "how-to" in the book. I don't mean full-blown construction plans but a discussion about something as basic as how to get hot water without paying hundreds of dollars to a plumber. I really enjoyed reading the information and viewing all the photos but when I was done with the book I felt like it didn't get me any closer to figuring out what kind of shower to make or even if I should try and attempt this project on my own at all! And just for the record, I am no slouch when it comes to construction\renovation nor am I one to back away from a DIY project because I think its above my pay grade. I just felt that this book really didn't do anything that an unhurried meandering in Home Depot for two hours would accomplish. As I said, it does light a fire but really doesn't seem to help with directing that fire once it's been lit.

Great ideas for an outdoor shower. With some great ideas from this book and family, mine turned out great. In the summer months we don't even use our indoor shower!!
