This guide is written for everyone who wishes to visit, whether on foot or by automobile, the many beautiful and historic attractions found within the Wichita Mountains of southwest Oklahoma. This is not just a hiking guide, but a guide for the hunter and angler who seek the enjoyment of nature's bounty. The book begins with a discussion of the Spirit Trail and the archaeological and geological history of the mountains. Next you'll read about the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and find information about short walks to historic and interesting places; longer trail hikes; historic points of interest that are accessible by automobile and historic cemeteries of the Wichitas. The book also provides a guided tour itinerary and a guide to hunting and to favorite fishing holes in the Wichitas. A variety of black & white photographs, maps and drawings illustrate the information.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Authority on the Wichitas, April 5, 2004
This review is from: Outdoor and Trail Guide to the Wichita Mountains of Southwest Oklahoma (Paperback)
Even if all you do is stay on the highway or enjoy an occasional picnic in one of the many picnic areas, this is a wonderful book that shares the rich history of the area. But, if you want to discover the true wealth of the Wichitas then this book is a "must have"! Mr. Ellenbrook's thoughtful presentation of the history of the area makes for interesting reading but for the more adventurous it ignites an excitement to put on the hiking boots, get out the daypack, and hit the trails to see history for yourself. His book is so full of hikes and adventures it could easily take a year or more of weekends to see it all. Some, like the "rock rooms" may take a four, five, or even more trips to locate them. But finding them is half the fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good history, bad trail guide, February 21, 2007
This review is from: Outdoor and Trail Guide to the Wichita Mountains of Southwest Oklahoma (Paperback)
This old standard has some great history of the area. But if you try to find the Rock Rooms or many other hikes from this book you will get very lost. Many descriptions are dated and were not very helpful to start with. For one hike you're told to find a rock shaped like a seal on top of a mountain covered with hundreds of strange shaped rocks. Is it the whole seal or just a head? Big or little? Not much help I'm afraid. Get it for the history but get another book to hike with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpfull, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Outdoor and Trail Guide to the Wichita Mountains of Southwest Oklahoma (Paperback)
Info is very dated and hard to follow. I've tried using this book several times and almost always find it very difficult to find the trail head. There are no maps, and the ones that are included are hand drawn and crude. I gave it 2 stars, as it does have some interesting information about the area.
