Instead of angular post-Fall inspired riffage or the art-damaged tones of their angsty Seattle neighbors, these boys have studied their AM radio classics, finding as much in common with Donald Fagan as contemporary homeboys The Sea And Cake. With a bite of George Harrison's guitar and a nip at Stereolab's rhythms, last year's debut "Blocked Numbers" was a true pop pleasure. This, their follow-up, channels a cocky hint of "Meat Is Murder"-era Smiths and sits on a treasure chest of songs that Todd Rundgren would gladly drop trou for. After the success of the remarkable minimalist compositions on "Blocked Numbers" Crystal Skulls returned with a sophomore effort that is more pop and less rock. Instead of relying on the basic elements of guitar, bass and drums to go along with lead singer Christian Warbo's voice, the band decided to add organ and synthesizer flourishes to diversify their sound. Unfortunately, what they had was beautifully simple. Here, they have gone a little overboard with their production, and the lyrics are less memorable, more carnivalesque. It's a sunnier record from a growing band, but not as compelling. Hopefully their next record will mark a return to their original style. If you haven't heard this band, check out their first album, which was easily one of the best indie rock records of 2005.
