A good band overdoing it, June 5, 2006

After the success of the remarkable minimalist compositions on "Blocked Numbers" Crystal Skulls returned with a sophomore effort that is more pop and less rock. Instead of relying on the basic elements of guitar, bass and drums to go along with lead singer Christian Warbo's voice, the band decided to add organ and synthesizer flourishes to diversify their sound. Unfortunately, what they had was beautifully simple. Here, they have gone a little overboard with their production, and the lyrics are less memorable, more carnivalesque. It's a sunnier record from a growing band, but not as compelling. Hopefully their next record will mark a return to their original style. If you haven't heard this band, check out their first album, which was easily one of the best indie rock records of 2005.
