Hello fellow Outlander fans,
Just noticed there isn't a thread for the upcoming TV series and thought I would remedy this. No particular form or shape re discussion, just dive :)

I am just a wee bit excited about Outlander hitting our screens next year and have started following the production news with increasing fangirl glee.

Off the top of my head:
1. Are you excited to see this series come to our screens?
2. What do you think of the casting so far?
3. What are you most looking forward to seeing from the book?
4. Favourite character(s)?

To get the ball rolling:
1. So excited, especially with Ron Moore on board. I loved his re-imagining of BattleStar Galactica (though he has been at pains to emphasise that his approach isn't a reimagining of DG's books, but a faithful transition to screen). I think the spirit of the books (oh True Blood how you broke my heart) is in safe hands. Plus his wife is a major fan so he's got added incentive right there ;)
2. I think they've got the casting spot on. I had some initial concerns over Jamie - he wasn't exactly what I had in my head when reading the books - but seeing some video of the NYCC Outlander discussions (they showed some behind the scenes production stuff and Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) I think he's right on the money. Catriona Balfe also looks like a great choice for Claire.
3. So many things, but a few scenes stand out: Claire going through the stones and encountering Black Jack Randall, Jamie and Claire's wedding night, Wentworth Prison name a few
4. Claire and Jamie of course. Also am intrigued to see how Tobias Maguire play's both Frank and BJR

Anyway, enough of my rambling.....anyone else?

Just to add, here are some the sites I visit for my daily Outlander fix (thanks Seabreeze for the one I missed)

Blogs/Fan sites (pretty funny) (Again, funny) (really up to date with all of the production stuff - excellent resource for following the series) (this is an awesome site with loads of smart discussion re the books themselves - visit the discussion forum) (this is one of a kind as DG is a regular visitor and often responds to comments - and even posts topics herself)

Tumblr (run by one of the regular posters on the Compserve site) (this lady has just started reading Outlander and is blogging the experience via tumblr - pretty funny so far)

Hey MM! Glad you started this.

1. Heck yeah, I can hardly contain my excitement!!!
2. I LOVE the casting! Obviously, they were mostly unknowns(at least to me) so they were not who I envisioned right off, but they honestly look the part IMO. And if DG is happy, then that's all that really matters anyway.
3. Oh man, how can I pick just one thing? I guess the first thing that comes to mind is the part where Claire is taking care of Jamie's shoulder after they have stopped for the night on the first day of meeting...The wedding & wedding night...Then, the part where she comes back to him after he thinks she is going back through the stones. The other ones you mentioned too.
4. All of DG's characters are written so well but Jamie and Claire are my favorites.

Are you on Goodreads? I'm in an Outlander group on there but I admit I don't post regularly.

I haven't checked out all those sites that I hadn't heard of but I will!

Thanks for starting it...I guess it won't premier until August, so this will help pass the time!

Yayee - good to see you ladies here :)

@Sara - I do visit Goodreads, so will add the discussion group to my regular visit list. Re the casting - I really didn't have too many expectations other than hoping they would go for quality of performance over a big Hollywood name. And now that we've gotten a taste of Sam and Catriona from the production promo I have no problem seeing them as Jamie and Claire.

@DD - I thought why the heck not start a thread. My very first on Amazon!

One of the scenes I'm looking forward to was hinted at when the production pics started to appear on twitter/tumblr - Frank & Ghost Jamie looking up at Claire in the window. The whole intensity of that moment when they meet without meeting (heh!) - I can't wait.

I probably won't post every day, but as the production rolls out I hope others will join us and we can get some discussion going. And of course once it airs, we will have plenty to talk about

Photo of Sam as Jamie...loved the comments on FB.'s so funny that folks are so darn picky...if the author says that it, I am good with it. Yeash...I say there is a joke about a roll in the hay somewhere in that post, right?

@DD - yep, just got through my tour of my regular Outlander sites and what a great start to the morning! Love the pic - and yeah, I wonder sometimes if people actually read the books. Diana says Sam's physique is pretty much what she envisioned for Jamie - and has been amused by some of the comments on facebook re wanting Sam to bulk up for the role - she's said he's not a contestant for WWF, he's more of a swimmer/athletic build. Hoping some fans get this out of their system and just go with the flow.

Hehe - roll in the hay.....Starz aren't stupid - they seem to be right on board with the fandom.

Sara says:
You know, all that nonsense really bothers me. I mean, really though--they need to get over themselves. If the author has said he is Jamie to HER then it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. Be glad that someone is even doing a tv show. Sheesh.

Michelle Mac says:
@Sara - yep. Maybe its just me, I am more a spirit of the books kinda gal rather than being so focused on minute detail. There were grumblings about Lallybroch (from the pics they showed in the Outlander behind the scenes vid from NYCC) not looking as some had pictured it in their heads. I just can't get het up about that kinda stuff. I just think if this stuff is going to block your filter when viewing, you're off to a rough journey to the premier.

As long as the characters have the chemistry on screen as they did on the pages of the book, that the dialogue stays true to Diana's, the emotionally intense scenes deliver the punch, I will be happy :)

Hey all, there is an existing discussion about Outlander TV series on the Echo in the Bone forum - if you want to join in

I linked from about page 40 where they are discussing the casting of Sam Heughan as Jamie

Hi, Elderly English lady here, resident in Canada now. Elderly I may be, but my heart jumps at the casting of Sam as Jamie. Claire I thought could have been played by Alexis Kingdom, remember her in Nell Gwynne on tv? She is short, curvy and has the requisite hair and boobs!

I have read Outlander series many times, rereading now ready for the new book and TV show.

I now have a better understanding of the War of Independence, a mystery to me being English, sorry, don't hate me!

Did I read correctly that they are breaking the first Season into two parts? The first 8 episodes in August (as planned) and the second in early 2015 sometime? NO!!! I think this is a terrible idea and the idiot who came up with this idea should be flogged!

EDITED TO ADD - But ... I did hear that it will almost definitely be picked up for a second season ... barring something awful.

What say you? =)

I loved the series although I have to read one more book and the new book just out. I thought it would make a great tv series too and glad its happening I just wish it was on something I actually got though darn it.

I love Outlander! Anyone know if it will be available on Amazon Prime Video? I have searched but haven't found anything. Not shocking... I figure they won't tell us when it will be "free" for a while. :)

I don't know. I doubt it, because it is Starz. Amazon just recently made a deal with HBO, so I don't think anything Starz will be on Amazon's line-up. Great thought, though.

You'll be able to rent it on Netflix when the season is completed - it already shows up there, but no release date yet.

This is how I have watched Game of Thrones.

Also, Starz is having a free first view of the first episode on August 2, a week before the offical start (presumably to get more people to sign up) - details here:

I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for asking, and please let us know if you get any updates!

If you go to the STARZ network website they have posted different ways you can watch the first episode. I will try thru my On Demand, if not there, I will try watching online. You tube also has a STARZ channel.

MJG says:
Thanks! We have Starz, but my cable provider is not on the list for "on demand". I hope I can still watch it early somehow.
