Book Description

A husband and wife walking home. A stranger with a glistening blade. A brief struggle, an ambulance in the distance.

This is a story that begins where others end…

The revenge had been spectacular, a dish best served bloody and left to die on the sidewalk. In those final moments, the young man had clearly looked into the face of his parents’ killer; only afterward did he realize that there was, quite literally, no looking back. There had been a straight line and he had stared into its eyes, and then he crossed it without hesitation. The young man had once been an eager student, an engineer at the beginning of graduate school – ready to follow in his father’s footsteps, ready for a life of little surprise, of straight lines. That was gone, though, memories from a stranger’s life. He had accepted his new role and set about joining the ranks. Philadelphia was an army of shadows, and its General was a man named Ghos.

That was the beginning.

Burn when he’s wounded in an ambush, bridges begin to burn and bodies start to pile up, and this young man will have to decide whether he wants to accept the life he already has, or if he wants to fight tooth and bloody nail for something better.

I'm in the middle of this. I have to say the title was what attracted me to the book. I like dark and funny with a twist, but there is no clear path, it does not flow and the language of the conversations isn't consistent. Trying for David Sedaris using quirky characters, but falling short. It feels like a high school student trying to be cool. I will try to finish this, however, and maybe update my review if it improves.
