The Greatest Trio of all Time!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Outlandos to Synchronicities [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Andy Summers on Guitar, Stewart Copeland on drums and the one and only Sting on Bass and vocals. This video is the best video that has ever been released by the Police. My personal favorite songs on this video are "Fallout" from Hatfield polytechnic Feb 21 1979 the first ever live preformance of "Message in a Bottle" which was not recorded yet, also from Hatfield Polytechnic. Honestly all their songs are great and a must have from any Police fan!

I've been a tremendous Police fan for years, so I was quite excited by this title when I first heard about it. In many ways it delivers, but I also feel it could have been stronger. On the plus side, the interview clips with Sting, Stewart, Andy, and Miles (Copeland, the band's manager) are interesting and sometimes quite amusing. Some of the backstage footage (including Stewart's own Super 8 footage) is a hoot, especially when showing the boys at their most contentious. The live footage, while okay, is not all that I could have hoped for, though. Some of the footage is just of pretty lousy audio/video quality, barely better than a bootleg (specifically the footage from the Hammersmith Odeon show.) Some of the most interesting and exciting performances ("Regatta DeBlanc/Can't Stand Losing You" in Florida) get cut short. "It's Alright For You" is not even an actual live performance, just lip-synching and mimicking for a tv show. There's also, in my opinion, too much rehashing of footage already available in the "Around the World" and "Synchronicity Concert" videos. It would have been nice instead to see more samples of different shows, instead of multiple songs from the same few. The footage is surely out there somewhere; it would be nice to be able to see more of it beyond having to track down unauthorized copies. All in all, this is still a worthy addition to any Police collection and deserves DVD release at some point--especially if, perhaps, it would come with some additional and different concert footage.

Since this stellar video is packed with plenty of concert footage and interviews with Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Sting, it is obviously worth owning. They are masterful musicians, and this splendid video spans their career, from the humble beginning to the penultimate Shea Stadium concert that was an epiphany for Sting (a story I had never heard before). Best of all, "Outlandos..." contains illuminating interviews with the Police's FOURTH member: their manager, Miles Copeland. His commitment to the band's success is stirring, and his strong personality is an electrifying display of competent authority. I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Copeland at one of Sting's solo concerts, and this video perfectly captures his obvious power and grace. As a fan of the Police, I could not imagine passing this video by. It's the best music-based video I've seen since Van Halen's Live DVD (which features valuable subtitles)!

seen The Police live back in the early 80's! The insights into the band are wonderful as well as seeing the progression of the band from the late 70's to their break up. If you like/love the police buy this! I forgot how much I loved this band! I think I drove my husband crazy watching this over and over and over!!

This tape would be worth the cost just to see "Bring on the night" performed live. If you had any doubt about this band being one of the greatest of all time. You won't have any left after watching this. This is not a rental. You will want to watch this tape over and over. The interviews give a good insight into The Police and the relationships of three of the best musicians ever.

Decent effort...,

This is a decent effort of packaging a Greatest Hits Live video release overall, good selection of songs but it fails in a few areas..A) Three songs (Every Breath, Every Little Thing She Does, The Bed's Too Big) are used in the backround over video footage. It would of been nicer seeing that this is supposed to be live material to have live performances of these on here (okay, minus Every Little Thing.. the live version they did [is bad] - Gateshead 82 need I say more). B) Demolition Man from the Gateshead 82 concert is actually toned down aka edited due to Sting's several uses of [profanities] during the song (to those who want the full unedited version its on the "Ghost In The Machine Live" video release). Otherwise, decent effort.

How I wish I could have seen these guys live!!!! I guess the closest thing to that is this video, although I would LOVE a DVD version. An extremely good effort considering there is not much video available for The Police. Will keep my fingers crossed for a reunion of these talented musicians.
