Editorial Reviews

2009 release from the Scottish bagpipe player. Bagpipes playing Bluegrass? It might sound like a gimmick, but for the brilliant Scottish piper Fred Morrison, one of Celtic music's most profoundly skilled and audaciously inventive exponents, it's a wholly natural alliance. Outlands features such top Americana luminaries as producer Gary Paczosa (Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks, and Nickel Creek), banjo/guitar ace Ron Block (Alison Krauss & Union Station) and Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist Tim O'Brien, exploring the inherent connections Morrison perceives between their traditions and his.

An incredible album from Fred Morrison - by general consensus the finest piper in the world today.

I've really loved his previous records. These are all classics in world piping, distinguished from by Fred's compositions, his peerless technique, the use of different kinds of pipes and the low whistle, and the sheer lyricism and musicality. The new album, however, is nothing short of revolutionary. Bluegrass has its roots in Scottish music, but oddly there has never been a serious attempt to bring the two traditions together in a piping album - until now. Fred has the compositional ability and technical prowess to carry this off. The combining of the pipes and the banjo and guitar/mandolin of Ron Block and Tim O'Brien (among the world's top bluegrass players) is astonishing; I've rarely heard such tight playing, but precision is the name of the game in both traditions so perhaps this is not so surprising.

My favorite track is the Kansas City Hornpipe. Great interplay between pipes and banjo. An exhilarating and infectious tune.

Highly recommended for piping fans who want to hear the mighty Fred taking piping forward yet again, and for bluegrass fans who want to see how well the combination of bluegrass and Scottish music can work - extremely well IMO!

This is the best traditional music/folk album I have heard in years. Varied, very well balanced and a joy to listen to as a result and not many instrumental albums in my experience achieve such overall consistency. Fred`Morrison is totally at ease with these bluegrass giants with pipes complemented seamlessly in such star collaborative tracks as "The Kansas City Hornpipe" and the " Outlands" title track - it seems as if they have always played together. The traditional Scottish compositions on the album are great on pipes and whistles with excellent guitar and bodhran accompaniment - this is a cracker of an album - have had it on repeat since I bought it!

Fred Morrison is so fast and precise on smallpipes that it makes me giddy. Putting that skill to the task with banjo, guitar and various other Appalachian sounds. This is now one of my favorites.
