if you like: Southern Country Boogie Swamp Rock.
In these days, when everybody seems to talk about Big & Rich and the versatility of their music, Jeffrey Steele can easily match up with them, even though his influences are less contradictory to country music than those of B&R.
Lead singer of the mediocre successful, yet innovative country band Boy Howdy in the 90's, Steele has become one of the most successful, prolific and versatile songwriters of today in country music. On this album 14 original Steele-songs (the 15th is an accoustic live version of another track on the album) get paired with a seemingly life-tested, rusty and emotional voice and a mix of different musical styles, cooking up a magic brew of an infectious album.
From the country of the 21st-century of "Countrified", to the swamp rock of "Shot Glass" and "Swamp Thing", from the hillbilly rock'n'roll of "Good Year For The Outlaw" to thoughtful ballads about losing ("I Can't Stop You") and the soul searching of "Runnin's What I'm Runnin' From", this album offers an exciting fresh varietey that even includes some R&B on "I'd Rather Drive".
"Outlaw" definitely belongs to one of the biggest surprises of the year and should make anyone happy, who is open to edgy and powerful music from both sides of country.

5.0 out of 5 stars A song for EVERY mood!, October 24, 2006

This review is from: Outlaw (Audio CD)
Two years after release and this CD is still in my car's player! It was THE music for my cross country road trip last summer. No matter what day you listen, there's a song to fit your mood: Ready for the weekend?..."Dance" will get you in the party mood. Had enough and gotta get away?..."Drive" is what you need. Has it been a perfect week?..."What a Life" will suit you. And "Twenty Years Ago" will have you reflecting on your own life and relationships with your family. "Once a Cowboy" should be a soundtrack for an epic film.
Jeffrey Steele is not only a extrodinary song writer, musician and producer...go see this man on stage! What an entertainer! I've seen his audience strung through various emotions just through one show. Crying, laughing and even dancing on the tables.
The word to describe this album is: ENERGY. And it's infectious.
Your money will be well spent.
