Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Before he even gets to the saloon, the entire town of Paradise knows that a dangerous gunslinger has ridden into town. What they don't know is why the man, who calls himself Gault, is there?or who has hired him. However, intrepid Cady McGill, the no-nonsense saloon owner, doesn't care. There's more to Gault than meets the eye, and Cady is just the person to figure it out. An enigmatic, slightly schizoid hero who makes his living off of guilty people, an independent heroine who takes nothing for granted, and a rather off-beat plot add interest to this lively, exceptionally well-written romance. Gaffney (Wild at Heart, Topaz, 1997), a Romance Writers of America (RWA) Golden Heart winner, lives in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

I love Patricia Gaffney's romance novels. I was very excited a "new" one was coming out. I ordered it and when it arrived I read the first paragraph. I said " Gee, this is familiar". That's because I read it and loved it 2 years ago. I think in all fairness to Amazon's shoppers and the fans of all writers, we should be advised when a book is a reprint. I've been duped and I don't like it.

Gaffney's CROOKED HEARTS cracked me up--a western comedy--and this was is more of the same, something I can't get enough of. Her ironies and tongue in cheek just blow me away. I loved the characters--the hero esp who poses as a gunfighter without knowing the first thing about handling guns and still manages to scare the living daylights out of people. Oh, I just enjoyed the heck out of this book, devoured it in a day!

Caddie McGill is a saloon owner with big dreams and a bigger heart. For years she has battled the man who wants to control the town, appropriately named Mr. Wyle, for control of her gold mine. Though it has ostensibly played out, it is hers, and she wants to keep it; more importantly, to keep her enemy from having it. However, Caddie is up against a foe who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Then, notorious gunfighter Jesse Gault enters town. With a legend that proeceeds him, Gault finds that people are willing to do whatever it takes to please him and to keep their lives. Only the lovely saloon owner appears unintimidated by him and the potential danger he poses. Despite this, he is attracted to her. Though she hates to admit it, even to herself, for men have treated her badly all her life, Caddie feels something for Gault. There is much more to this gunfighter than meets the eye, and as he makes a place in the town for himself, Jesse finds his way into Caddie's heart. When his secret is revealed, will he continue to have her love, or even to live?
***** Humor and romance combine to give this novel a touch that is reminescent of the James Garner SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL.... duet of movies. A spunky heroine, ordinary guy hiding behind a larger than life image, colorful townsfolk, and a comedic surprise twist make this a light novel that many will find easily enjoyable, especially when it is spiced up with very hot love scenes. *****

Enjoyed the story, some mystery, some comedy. She could have left out the graphic sex, I think most of us know how it goes. I skipped over those pages

Want a great cast, great pair, great romance AND hilarious set-ups and dialogue? Then you MUST read Patricia Gaffney. She has gone on to write hardcover--THE SAVING GRACES--with exceptional success, but her paperback historical romances are gems on their own. Don't miss this one especially. Ms. Gaffney's knowledge of human nature and wry humor make it special indeed!

While the story line in Outlaw in Paradise is light hearted the actual story is shallow. The characters don't really have goals in mind and the outcome is very predictable. Read only when you have nothing else, including the newspaper, available to read.

Outlaw in Paradise by Patricia Gaffney is a 2011 Open Road Media publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a delightful historical western romance that will tickle the funny bone and warm your heart.
Originally published in 1997, Open Road Integrated Media had re-issued the book in digital format.

Jesse Gault arrives in Paradise, Oregon looking every bit the quintessential outlaw gunslinger, dressed in black all the way down to his black cigarette. Looking for a saloon, Jesse discovers an establishment run by the beautiful Cady McGill, a woman he is instantly smitten with.
The town is full of folks believing Jesse has arrived in Paradise because of them and start making confessions to Jesse. This is hilarious because Jesse is not at all what he appears to be. Meanwhile, Jesse strikes up a friendship with some of the folks in Cady's saloon and soon begins trying to seduce the beautiful saloon owner. But, Cady is having a few problems with a rival who is hell bent on seeing her run out of business and getting his hands on her gold mine. The dangerous Jesse Gault should be able to help her with this problem... but as it turns out, Jesse may not be as fierce with a gun as people have presumed.

The only problem I had with this book was that it moved just a bit too slow. There were a few long periods with not much going on and the even the dialogue started to drag out just a little. However, once I got past the half way mark, things really picked up speed and all the elements came together to create a steamy hot romance, an action packed show down and a heartwarming story of community, friendship and happy ever afters.

The story started slowly. The characters took several pages to become engrossing. The plot advanced slowly. The ending seemed contrived. It was one of the very few choices I regret making.
