Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sullivan skillfully handles familiar plot elements and characters in his exciting second Robin Monarch novel (after 2012's Rogue). While the U.S. secretary of state, Agnes Lawton, is secretly negotiating with the foreign ministers of China and India aboard a freighter in the South China Sea, armed terrorists seize the ship. The group claiming responsibility, the Sons of Prophecy, demands the release of all political prisoners in the U.S., China, and India, as well as a ransom of $500 million from each country. Meanwhile, the man pulling the intricate strings of the operation, wealthy Cantonese triad chief Long Chan-Juan (aka the Moon Dragon), has a multilayered plan that he expects will secure him billions of dollars and immense power. Ex-CIA agent Monarch and Chinese Ministry of State Security agent Song Le have less than five days to save Lawton and the others. Thriller fans fond of high-stakes rescue scenarios will be more than satisfied. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Oct.)

From Booklist

Sullivan’s fine follow-up to the stellar Rogue (2012) continues the adventures of former CIA operative and master thief Robin Monarch. A secret meeting on a tanker in the South China Sea brings together the foreign ministers of China and India, along with the U.S. secretary of state. They are meeting to discuss a sinister project that has been given the green light, but before the details are on the table, the tanker is raided, and the various envoys are kidnapped. An outrageous ransom demand forces the U.S. president to make a bold move and hire Monarch to stage a rescue. For the operation to be successful, Monarch must work with allies from the other countries, but can he trust them? Sullivan has created a fine adventure-thriller hero in Monarch, who fits perfectly into the Ludlum or Vince Flynn mode. The action and the surprises are nonstop. Readers will demand the next one in the series, pronto. --Jeff Ayers

Not as good as Rogue - but entertaining enough to take the trouble to read it if you like this style and enjoyed Rogue.

I really enjoyed the previous work in this series, but I must admit that my interest waned and I moved on to another book before I ended this one. The writing is great, characters strong & everything else was pretty much there, so I should have stuck it out. Why didn't I? I'm not sure. If I could write this well, I'd be more than happy.

I read a great deal - often with more than one book on-the-go (typically one fiction yarn and another non-fiction heavyweight). So I'm suspecting that for whatever reason, I'm probably the variable that's changed.

Rather than being dissatisfied, I think I probably found something else that caught my attention and so I wandered off down a different pathway.

Would I recommend buying the book? I've you've read the previous work and enjoyed it, I'd certainly suggest it's worth getting (even better would be to preview some of the book and make your own mind up).

Would I not recommend buying it? No, there's nothing that makes this in any way a "poor" or "bad" story.

There are far less enjoyable books that have cost me a lot more - so, for my final verdict? It's remaining in my reader - I'll go back later and either finish it or re-read (and I suspect, I'll probably enjoy it immensely).

I do like the character of Robin Monarch. But the other characters seem like they pop in then pop out. This is the first of his books I have read so maybe the background is better explained in earlier books. Overall storyline, i thought it could have been better. It didn't seem really well put together but more like scratching for something to see if it worked.
There needs to be an editor to correct some grammatical/spelling errors that hurt the flow while reading.

My first time reading this author. I was not disappointed, page turner kept me reading. The main character Monarch is a semi-retired thief that had worked for the government. He is called back by the President himself to help find the US Secretary of State, Indian and Chinese ministers who have been taken hostage while on a secret meeting between the three nations. All before a new US President is elected and the influence of a wealthy Hong Kong Triad leader. All makes a fun and fast pace read for the main character is running against the clock and must find them before they are killed live via the internet.
