Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-Using as a basis the true story of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's Thanksgiving banquet for their Brown's Hole, UT, friends in the late 1890s, McCully introduces two fictional characters, bringing the tale into a child's realm. Clara and her mother are traveling across country to make a new life with Papa in California when a mountain blizzard blocks their train. Facing either freezing in the car or the treachery of train robbers (the child saw a wanted poster for Butch Cassidy), Mama accepts a fellow passenger's invitation to have Thanksgiving dinner with him and his friends. After a long and arduous journey by sleigh, they arrive at their destination where they are warmly welcomed and enjoy a marvelous feast. It's only when Clara gets a good look at the young gentleman who asks her to dance that she realizes that he is Butch Cassidy; they have been dining with a band of notorious outlaws. McCully's single- and double-page full-color spreads evocatively capture the ambiance of the early trains, the sweep of the landscape, and the excitement of the adventure; the artist also deftly individualizes her characters with aplomb. An appended note and additional information on the copyright page fill in the historical background, and a two-page map showing the Union Pacific railroad routes rounds out the presentation.

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-5. Based on a true incident in the 1890s West, when Butch Cassidy and his outlaws threw a lavish Thanksgiving banquet for the ranching community that was their favorite outlaw hideout, McCully imagines it from the point of view of a child who lands up at the party as an unexpected guest. Clara and her uptight mother are on a railway journey from New York State to meet up with Clara's father and make a new life in California when their train is stopped by a huge snowstorm. They accept a fellow passenger's invitation to ride with him on a sled to his "family's" Thanksgiving dinner in Brown's Hole, Utah. When they get there, Clara recognizes that their host is the outlaw from the wanted posters. McCully's exciting watercolor paintings show the adventure of the railroad journey when immigrants and roughnecks were crowded together with elegant travelers. Then there is the wildness of the snowstorm that transforms the prairie and, finally, the boisterous Thanksgiving party, where Clara joins the feast and dances the polka with the famous, charming outlaw. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites! The one-star reviewer entirely overlooks the charm of this story., May 14, 2009
This review is from: An Outlaw Thanksgiving (Paperback)
This is a wonderful, fun story that teaches, among other things, that no one is "all good" or "all bad." Beautiful artwork and a charming historical fiction tale showing aspects of life on the frontier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Afraid of This Book!, February 9, 2003
This review is from: An Outlaw Thanksgiving (Hardcover)
This book tells of a moment in time in the lives of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they were just trying to create a good time for their friends at the holidays. The wild west and outlaws are unique to the North American past and we should embrace the stories just as we do of all history. Right or wrong, these people exhisted, and had interesting lives. They are not celebrated in this book - it is just a story that is fun and interesting. Don't be afraid to read this to your children - my children owned this book and haven't yet grown up to be outlaws.
