Book Description

March 1, 1995 10 and up
Objective, factual stories about some of the most infamous men in our history capture the real lives of Jesse James and other notorious outlaws of the West, without the glamour and hype that has been created around them.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-"Outlaws" in the title suggests a broad array of subjects; however, only Frank and Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Butch Cassidy are included here-unless you count mention of "The Wild Bunch" as one more. For wider coverage, see Leonard J. Matthews's Gunfighters (Rourke, 1989). Herda uses clear exposition amplified with a variety of black-and-white illustrations-scenes from movies, sketches, photographs, a reproduction of a Russell painting, and a couple of good steel-cuts. A serviceable, if limited, overview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CHILD'S Book on Outlaws Ever, August 24, 2011
I don't know who would compare a Young Adult book to an adult book and come to the conclusion that this is too slim to be a satisfying read. This is a magnificently crafted children's book that gives the real picture of outlaws in America, not the Hollywood glamorized version. Outlaws rarely made out well (remember Butch Cassidy and Sundance?) except on film and in poorly researched books bent on idealizing lawbreakers. In this book, author D. J. Herda takes an objective look at what several prominent historical figures did in their lives, and how they ultimately paid the final price for their actions. This is the first truly MORAL history of outlaws in the American West I have ever read. Don't buy it for yourself if you're looking for a way to kill several hours at the beach or on a plane. But DO buy it for your children if you're looking for a way to open up the lines of communication and teach them the consequences of bad behavior. Five stars all the way! A magnificent book.

I will never be able to recover the thirty minutes I spent reading parts of this slim, poorly written book.
