Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Patricia "Patch" Kendrick arrives in Oak County, Tex., from Fort Benton, Mont., to claim Ethan Hawk, a man who jokingly promised to marry her eight years earlier when he was a 25-year-old running from the law and she was the precocious 12-year-old daughter of a man who befriended him. Patch has transformed herself from a tomboy into a well-bred woman, but Ethan's position remains largely unchanged. Though he was eventually caught and jailed for murder, he has been stalked since his release by the father of a woman he allegedly raped. Ethan swears he found Merielle after the rape and that he killed in self-defense. Merielle can't shed light on those events because since the trauma she has had the mind of a child. Ethan pretends he's not in love with Patch as she attempts to clear his name in a manner that demonstrates that under the veneer of high society remains a core of will and assertiveness. But that spirit is contradicted when she says things like "You'd never rape a woman, Ethan . . . You wouldn't have to." Unfortunately, Johnston's ( Kid Calhoun ) efforts at generating suspense prove futile since the plot is predictable and the true criminal is obvious early on.

5.0 out of 5 stars #2 FOLLOW-UP TO THE BAREFOOT BRIDE, September 15, 2006

"Poor Wasted"!
Really got a kick out of the determined "Patch" Kendrick in traveling [which couldn't be easy] to Oakville, Texas from Montana. She was tired of waiting for Ethan Hawk to show up and claim her as his bride.
Of course she doesn't have a clue of what his life has been like for the past 8 years.

Ethan Hawk became a man that Patch could still love even if her memories were of a 25 year old man. She has finally grown up but still retains some of the qualities that endeared her to Hawk.

She gets to meet Ethan's sister, Leah and his mother, Nell.
His friends Frank Meade and Boyd Stuckey show up.
Frank is escorting Merielle Trahern in town when Patch bumps into them.

Her re-introduction to Ethan was a revelation to her in the shoot-out.
We meet some great secondary characters that flesh out the plot - Jackson Trahern planning to kill Hawk - his mother, Nell appeared to be on her death bed - Patch looks up her mother's father - Patch still collects wounded animals and connects with Leah over them - Boyd keeps showing up and intends to marry Patch - Ahhhh! and then we have the mystery of the bounty hunter, Cameron Calloway - [And who the devil needs sizzle. Characters never fall in love the same way we imagine.]

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - just a bit much of PMS - Look for Cam's story in THE INHERITANCE with a trip to England. What a way for a bounty hunter to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Historical Romance, September 29, 2005
This review is from: Outlaw's Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
I happen to be a huge fan of john johnston. This book was wonderful and makes you feel like you are there with the characters and not reading the book. I also love how john johnston will have a character in one book i.e. Patch and then branch off and have another book that is Patch's Story. EXCELLENT MUST READ

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and fun, December 7, 2002

I liked this book. It didn't have everything I usually look for in sizzling romance novels, but it kept be turning the pages. And I cared about the charaters. If your looking for a real sizzling page turner try "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons.
