Amazon.com Review

Hey pardner, you lookin' for something more from your 3-D first-person shooters than mindless action and unrelated levels that serve more as technological showcases than as settings for a coherent story? Maybe it's time you cinched your gun belt, strapped on your spurs, and entered the atmospheric world of Outlaws, a genuine classic of a game that thrusts players into a Wild West adventure with a spaghetti Western plot. You're a retired marshal recently coaxed out of retirement by the sinister, mustachioed bad guys that killed your wife, burned your farm, shot your dog, and stole your Bible.

Outlaws has a lot to offer fans of single-player action, but the graphics are strictly love 'em or leave 'em. The cutscenes used to advance the plot are rendered in gritty comic-book fashion, and that design theme extends to the actual gameplay. Everything from the enemies you fight to the guns you carry have the look of a graphic novel, and that might not appeal to gamers used to being thrust into game worlds that display everything in full 3-D. Here the environments are 3-D, but all the characters and objects are reminiscent of cardboard cutouts.

We appreciated this design decision, as it drew us further into the game's plot and made transitions from the movies to the interactive portions more seamless. Even now, several years after its release, Outlaws still inspires cries of "yeehaw!" every time we load it up. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • The plot, voice work, and especially the music exude classic Western movie style
  • A strong graphic design with even stronger gameplay
  • Cutscenes are done well
  • Somewhat realistic elements like having to manually reload your guns make for tense action
Cons:
  • It's an older game and won't impress the majority of the 3-D action crowd

5.0 out of 5 stars No words can correctly describe Outlaws. Here goes...., December 25, 1999

*****WARNING: OUTLAWS IS ADDICTIVE!***** (thanks, Gojo)

One of the Best in the gaming Industry. Even After 2 years of being Printed!

The Best ''First-Person shooter''out there. If you have a Joystick, Gamepad, or even the old Mouse and Keyboard, whatever, this game works.

You are Marshal James Anderson former Lawman current retired and hard working Farmer. Your wife is killed and only child kidnapped. Nothing to loose your heart seeks revenge. With classic cut-scenes that tell the story, and many hours of assuring gameplay, Outlaws can't be beat. With three Different difficulty settings available: The Good, Bad, and The Ugly. These three modes are challenging.

Good: starting off with plenty of health and ammo lyin' around, who couldn't win?

Bad: Less Health and ammo to stumble across, and badguys are more aggressive and take more shots to kill.

The UGLY: the ugly got it's name. Few ammo and Health to get. Better use you're ammo sparingly and shoot quick these Badguys aim ta kill!

With three modes like Spaghetti Western(The game), Bounty hunter(earlier life of Marshal James Anderson), and Multiplayer Shoot-outs(online). Historical Missions(Bounty Hunter): The earlier life of the Marshal, with many challenging levels to complete. Multiplayer Capture the Flag, Team Play, and Kill the Fool with the Chicken, are some of the various settings online.

Don't mean ta babble on like this but I hope this Helped!

Buy this game. I personally guarantee that it won't be a letdown. Thanks fer listenin.

*Tune in next time.......*

5.0 out of 5 stars A Diamond in the Rough, September 18, 2000
This review is from: Outlaws (CD-ROM)
Ever since getting into gaming, I have noticed the growing trend of the 1st person shooter genre, the trend set by those wonderfull guys at ID software. Ever since Doom, each new game seems to be related to it somehow, all of them set in space or in the future, having you battle it out with hell spawn, or outlandish aliens. With weapons consisting of nothing more then hyper blasters and rocket launchers. I got sick of this overdone theme fast and longed for a 1st person shooter with a story, one that captured me and consisted of more then just blowing up crap.

Then came Outlaws, a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem amongst the piles of other games that seemed to have everyones attention. Outlaws plays out like a classic spaghetti western. It consists of a wonderfull story that tells itself through handdrawn cutscenes and ingame action. You are a US Marshal, who has retired, but while away in town, outlaws set on vengence, kill your wife and kidnap your daughter, making your retirement shortlived.

This game was originaly released in late 1996 and met with mixed reviews, most were to caught up in the phenomena known as Quake to pay it any mind but for those that did not, boy did they miss out. The graphics are superb for it's time, and the music is out of this world. The weapons are simple, real world weapons from the times of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. You can't shoot forever and you actually have to reload. This game takes skill and stealth. I have played through the single play mode countless times enjoying it more and more each time.

After you are done with single player make sure to take advantage of the wonderfull multi-player modes. Outlaws plays well online with a 28.8 modem and is supported on Microsoft's, zone.com. It also is a great game for any lan party or the network at work. It is easy to start up and easy to play. There are many different modes to try, deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and an original game called kill the fool with the chicken. It also developed a pretty big on-line community with many new custom maps always being created leading to endless replayability. Outlaws also has customizable taunt files you can bind to the f-keys. This realy adds to the game enabling you to yell out insults to your oponents. You can even record or import your own voice or clips from movies or what ever you can think of.

All and all this game is a must have for any gamer who even hints at liking western movies. You can't beat the price for what you get. Don't pass this up, truly one of the greatest PC games ever made.
