Excellent secret history of the comix lunatic fringe,
By Ace Backwords (www.geocities.com/acebackwords2002) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Outlaws, Rebels, Freethinkers & Pirates (Paperback)
This is an excellent, well-written book. Bob Levin is carving out a niche as a keen historian of the underground fringe of comicsdom. This book will probably appeal to the hard-core comix fans, as well as general readers who are interested in the lives of artists and how their personal psychology is reflected in their artwork. I read one review that said a whole book could be written on the chapter about B.N. Duncan. And I agree. I've been hanging out with Duncan for the last 25 years, and I'd read any book that could explain the guy to me, cuz he's a mystery, that dude. Highly reccomended. I still don't like Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth, but I have to give him props for all the great books he publishes.

Hilarious takes on US culture,

Levin's OUTLAWS et al is more than just a good book about contemporary American cartoonists. It's also a witty, lucid exploration of US culture far from the deadening grasp of corporate-owned publishers, TV, film studios, radio chains. An immensely entertaining read.
