A lot of books on this subject are poorly written and edited.

Here is the first thing you need to know before you buy this book; it is not about American outlaw MCs. Although American clubs the Outlaws and the Bandidos play a major part in the trajectory of the story within this book, be advised that it is about a British club called the Pagans; no relation to the US club. I found the summary of the book on Amazon to be very deceptive. Not that I mind reading about a British club.

This book is about a small British club called the Pagans (no relation to the US Pagan's). The Pagans are a fiercely independent club, small club in the UK. They butt heads with their local Hells Angels and other MCs in some severely violent battles and outbreaks of violence. Over time the Pagans decide to absorb several smaller clubs throughout the area under the banner of one patch. Calling themselves the Midland Outlaws (no relation to the US club), they soon outnumber the Hells Angels and start to get courted by larger US based MCs like The Outlaws and Bandidos in the hopes they will give up their own Outlaws patches and join one of the larger US based MCs. As part of this courtship, the Midland Outlaws travel to Canada, Florida, Australia and several other places all over the world and strike up strong bonds with Outlaws and Bandidos chapters. They see first hand how powerful and lucrative being absorbed into one of the big clubs can be, but they also see the risks.

This book is an absolutely fantastic read and nearly impossible to put down. The story is told chronologically through the timeline of the Midland Outlaws, but often digresses to give ample history lessons about the origins of the big clubs, the biggest battles, the biggest rivalries, and the biggest outbursts of carnage.

I bought this in an airport because it looked interesting and the books I really wanted were the price of a steak dinner. What I like about the book is the tone of narration. Its not intentionally in-your-face to give all the boring suburbanites their fix and isn't some "I'm the biggest bad-a** on the planet" piece of garbage. It tells a lot about the code of ethics commonly found in MCs that Sons of Anarchy doesn't cover or explain. For example, almost any documentary or book mentions that MCs rose from WWII vets looking for action. He explains that at the time 1 in 5 US males was a WWII vet. People just get fed up or bored. Anyhow, its worth a read and an above average book that at worst is at least entertaining.

I've enjoyed reading this book. I struggle to focus on reading an entire book, often times putting it down and possibly never finishing. It helps to now have a job that requires dealing with down time. This is an interesting read for me, I've never known a biker. I'm from a small town and haven't had the exposures of a biker gang. I bought this at an airport and have stayed interested in it throughout.
