This book is amazing!! It touches on every aspect of writing a fiction novel and gives great examples. I am defintely an outliner and planner and had already written some of my outline when I got this book. After reading it I have so many more insights into how to prepare to make my writing successful whether it is just for me or for everyone else to read. Ms. Weiland definitely promotes doing things your own way to maximize your creativity but she shows you throughout this book how outlining, no matter how you do it, can help your wrting reach its full potential. I believe this book would be helpful for both novice and experienced writers, especially if the later has not generally used outlines for for their work.

Excellent book! As an amateur writer, in the back of my mind, I'd always wondered what was wrong with me. Why couldn't I just sit down and, given time, write a novel. About halfway through each time, I lost my focus, my drive... Like that "will power" you're supposed to have to lose weight. So, I blamed myself. I just don't have the personality, strength of character, or whatever it takes to be an author.

And now I realize a couple things: writing a novel is still tough, tough work, but it takes, for most writers, a lot of planning before that first scene is written.

Thank you so much, Ms. Weiland, for one of the most practical, inspirational books on writing I've read in a long, long time.

I felt that there was excessive advertising for her other books.

Understandably, providing examples of her own work to illustrate her process is an effective method. But the repetition of her other book titles felt like advertising more than example - several times in one page occasionally.

However, this is not to detract from the quality of the information she provides. There is a lot of sound advice and useful ideas in a manner that is very accessible. Ive made many notes in the crease and keep it close for reference.

Even with the minor issue noted above, I would purchase her other works.

This book is so freaking helpful. I'll be using it with everything I write, not just novels.

There's a lot of good advice about writing in this book, but if you're looking for a book to help you learn how to outline prior to starting a novel, as I was, it could be disappointing. The author uses his own books as examples, and if you haven't read them or bought them to follow his method, it's hard to go along with his method.
I found the advice from the contributing author, Becky Levine, very helpful.
If you haven't read a lot of how to write fiction books as I have, you might find this book an excellent book to read, especially because of the low price. It was not what I expected

Writing a novel or short story is on my endless list of things to do, but I had absolutely no idea where to start from. This book really explained well the steps needed to get started on such a mammoth project. It really opened my mind to so many possibilities, and made me realise it's not such an impossible dream. I'll be reading this book through again before I pick up the pad and pen to start my outlining, too much to take in at first read. Highly recommend to those who need some reassuring that you can do it and where you need to start from.

I'm so much more excited as well as prepared to write my novel, thanks to this informative book. I especially liked how she shared bits and pieces of outlines from her own successful books. I liked the idea that there is no real format in outlining a story; you do what works for you! Now I'm not worried about scribbling things down about every possibility that COULD happen at a particular point, and how and why that may or may not work. I used a highlighter and this is a great reference guide! Clear and concise.

As an aspiring novelist who always started out by "pantsing" it, my stories always seemed to fall flat. I always thought that outlining is an inhibiting and time consuming process, but this book shows the benefits and is a how-to guide to outline in an effective way that suits you. Outlining will definitely be a part of my own creative process from now on.

I recommend this to any aspiring author who has found the prospect of outlining challenging or has never even considered it.

Ms Weiland knows her stuff.

It was surprisingly helpful in many ways. There are many nuggets of truth for new writers as well as seasoned writers that have got caught up in their one way of doing things. The book regularly gives unbiased views on outlining vs "pantsing" which is very helpful to figure out what is best for you. I will never write a book without outlining. I will not go on a road trip with out some form of a mapped out plan on how to get to my destination. There is no reason why I wouldn't do the same for a novel.

Just finished Weiland's Outlining Your Novel, and even though I have dozens of books about writing and even a journalism degree, I found this book full of good practical advice. If you are an aspiring writer or already in the trade, this manual will help answer questions and offer practical ways to enhance your writing. He even features other writers and their websites to help. This one's a keeper.
