5.0 out of 5 stars Who are the savages?, June 5, 2002
This review is from: Outpost of Progress [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This dramatization of a Joseph Conrad story appropriately has more going on inside the characters minds than action, and Simon MacCorkindale in particular does a very good job at expressing his inner conflicts and torments. The story is set in Africa towards the end of the 19th century and centers around an English outpost. It's a story on two levels, one concerned with what was happening to Africa and its native people as European civilization moved into the continent and the other concerned with the inner conflict working inside the main character. This story challenges us to face the ethical questions and the question of the value of a man's honor.

This needs to be seen more than once. The first time, you get the framework of the story. After that, you get more and more into the main character's being, and see through his eyes, understanding his torments. There's entertainment here, but is more to be seen for stimulation of your mind.
