Editorial Reviews

As war ravages Eastern Europe, a battle-hardened team of mercenaries sets off on a mission, facing an enemy powerful and evil enough to turn these violent, seemingly indestructible men into quivering victims. Surrounded by hostile forces, they fight their way to a half-century-old underground Nazi bunker, a place where soldiers were experimented on to create a super-human army. The mutilated remains of those soldiers still exist along with a ghastly discovery - a survivor. Then suddenly, the men are attacked by primeval, horrific forces, protecting another secret - a nightmare they and the entire world will now have to face.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent British horror film. March 21, 2008
By Tommy
If you are a fan of horror movies like Dog Soldiers, The Keep or (the original) The Fog, you will definately dig Outpost. Great cast, wicked "gothic" look and some of the best Nazi Zombies ever put on film. The acting is solid as are the sets and cinematography. Another cool thing is that this independent movie is shot in the 2:35 aspect ratio, which is normally reserved for epic Hollywood productions. The color scheme is that of a Nine Inch Nails video and it really gives certain scenes a nightmarish, otherwordly feel. As a movie snob, I am VERY surprised how much I enjoyed Outpost and I hate 90% of the horror films I see these days. This reminds me of early John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing) as the horror is implied more often than shown (don't worry, there are a few brutal killings as well). Blows away the cult 70's film ShockWaves (also about experimental Nazi Zombies). I hope this movie gets a cult following and a sequel is made.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little independent Nazi Zombie movie. March 4, 2008
If you're tired of gigantic hollywood horrors with their formulaic plots and calculated frights, you might want to try this little movie. Set in Eastern Europe, shot in Scotland, starring Ray Stevenson and costing a little over £1 million, you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Genuine tension is offset with sparing gore. Great gun battles and some Nazi voodoo technology thrown in for good measure make this micro-budget effort well worth watching. There are some great characters from all over the world dying in some really creative ways and some pretty nasty baddies lurking in a pretty scary environment.

Why not bypass the hollywood dross and see how a bunch of enthusiastic Scottish film-makers do things. Great fun stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Rough March 12, 2008
Outpost is great little film - I bought it on a whim, as the story synopsis was interesting to me. I was consistently surprised at what a solid and enjoyable film it truly is - well written, well shot, and well acted. The characters are compelling, and avoid the narrow, one-dimensional macho posturing that most lazy filmmakers believe characterizes military life. At the same time, it effectively captures the consequences of that violent profession on the people that choose to make it their life's work. The horror element is very effective, making maximum use of the setting to achieve some real scares - and I would particularly commend the make up and costuming, which are very effective and essentially seamless (never apparent even though they are depicting some vivid subject matter). The core story is an interesting and unique twist on a subject other films have touched on - and the ending, while not exactly unexpected, is effectively delivered. I was prepared for a made-for-SciFi Channel kind of flick, and can only say that it is head and shoulders above that level - a wonderful example of what talented filmmakers can do with fixed resources as long as they have a true passion for the story they're telling. It comes through here. Give it a look, it's well worth your time.

I got suckered into this movie because it was suggested alongside other zombie movies. If you're looking for gut-munching, brain-eating shambling undead, look elsewhere. This is more accurately described as a Nazi Ghost Story, where the ghosts are still very real, tangible "undead" (and I use the term loosely). They have bodies, and you effectively can't kill them.

Zombie-ness aside, this is otherwise a fairly decent flick. The acting is good for an indie flick. The camerawork is quite adequate (a little over-exposed in the opening scenes, but otherwise quite moody and atmospheric). There it s bit of tension built throughout certain parts of the movie. However, I also felt like the tension wrought by the moodiness and a few of the scenes never actually came to anything. I was honestly expecting things to jump out at any moment. Sadly, they basically never did, and that kind of ruined it for me.

The ending, which I won't give away, reminded me more of an episode of the X-files than of a zombie movie. A pretty solidly earned 3 stars. Decent cinematography, good atmospheric feel, but no zombie gut/brain-munchery, and insufficient payoff in scares / thrills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie!!!! Absolutely entertaining..... May 30, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
Reffering to the people who write bad reviews for stupid reasons,...You know what pisses me off, is when I click on a movie review on here, and here freaking theater major, bitch about how the movie was not "deep" enough, the story lines, character dialogue,....blablabla,,, its a zombie movie, if you want Shakespeare why in the hell do you click on a zombie movie? go watch something else, but dont give a movie a bad review, cause its wasn't deep enough for you, characters,..... Its a zombie movie, its should have awesome weaponry, which its does, great looking zombies, check, Great acting and actor selection for the given role, check also. One thing that pisses me off about any kind of movies, is when the directors put wrong looking and wrong sounding actor for a given role, i.e. Steven Seagal as a rapper, or a freaking ballet dancer, Hes freaking Steven Seagal for god sakes, he only does one thing right, chop people with his Aikido. This movie was more than awesome, ak47's, the the actors were great and perfect for the role, I love the redneck, and the big english guy, btw, I love how they all get shredded to dead, great great great, P.S. please dont click on a zombie movie if you are looking to watch some poetic stuff....
