3.0 out of 5 stars Workmanlike Western, February 2, 2008
This review is from: Outpost (A Roundup large print Western) (Hardcover)
Ben Fairchild is a freighter employed by Phil Comer ,and they are out on the trail together ,about a half day's ride from the town of Outpost when they come across Indian sign .Fearing that a war party has broken free of the reservation they head for a nearby farm ,run by the Clyman family, only to discover the father and mother dead and their daughter Suzette missing ,presumably a captive of the renegade Utes who carried out the raid .
The first rescue party sent out by the local cavalry fails in its mission to rescue the girl and a second party ,under the leadership of the inexperienced Captain Reynolds is sent out .Ben is separated from the rest of the party following a major skirmish and the book then follows his travails as he tries to make his way back to the fort while coping with near starvation and the bitter cold including an encounter with Long Night an Indian and a leader of the warrior band that carried out the attack
There is a romantic subplot involving a relationship between Ben and a saloon singer ,a mixed race woman named Georgia ,which slows the action down a tad.

The book has ingredients familiar to readers of Lauran Paine's other books such as Vengeance Trail .It is a brisk and formulaic Western which works well within the limits of its modest ambition .A good evening's read for western lovers
