3.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT, I repeat NOT a ZOMBIE movie... In the typical sense.
I got suckered into this movie because it was suggested alongside other zombie movies. If you're looking for gut-munching, brain-eating shambling undead, look elsewhere. This is more accurately described as a Nazi Ghost Story, where the ghosts are still very real, tangible "undead" (and I use the term loosely). They have bodies, and you effectively can't kill them...

If you're tired of gigantic hollywood horrors with their formulaic plots and calculated frights, you might want to try this little movie. Set in Eastern Europe, shot in Scotland, starring Ray Stevenson and costing a little over £1 million, you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Genuine tension is offset with sparing gore. Great gun battles and some Nazi voodoo technology thrown in for good measure make this micro-budget effort well worth watching. There are some great characters from all over the world dying in some really creative ways and some pretty nasty baddies lurking in a pretty scary environment.

Why not bypass the hollywood dross and see how a bunch of enthusiastic Scottish film-makers do things. Great fun stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent British horror film., March 21, 2008
This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
If you are a fan of horror movies like Dog Soldiers, The Keep or (the original) The Fog, you will definately dig Outpost. Great cast, wicked "gothic" look and some of the best Nazi Zombies ever put on film. The acting is solid as are the sets and cinematography. Another cool thing is that this independent movie is shot in the 2:35 aspect ratio, which is normally reserved for epic Hollywood productions. The color scheme is that of a Nine Inch Nails video and it really gives certain scenes a nightmarish, otherwordly feel. As a movie snob, I am VERY surprised how much I enjoyed Outpost and I hate 90% of the horror films I see these days. This reminds me of early John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing) as the horror is implied more often than shown (don't worry, there are a few brutal killings as well). Blows away the cult 70's film ShockWaves (also about experimental Nazi Zombies). I hope this movie gets a cult following and a sequel is made.

Outpost is great little film - I bought it on a whim, as the story synopsis was interesting to me. I was consistently surprised at what a solid and enjoyable film it truly is - well written, well shot, and well acted. The characters are compelling, and avoid the narrow, one-dimensional macho posturing that most lazy filmmakers believe characterizes military life. At the same time, it effectively captures the consequences of that violent profession on the people that choose to make it their life's work. The horror element is very effective, making maximum use of the setting to achieve some real scares - and I would particularly commend the make up and costuming, which are very effective and essentially seamless (never apparent even though they are depicting some vivid subject matter). The core story is an interesting and unique twist on a subject other films have touched on - and the ending, while not exactly unexpected, is effectively delivered. I was prepared for a made-for-SciFi Channel kind of flick, and can only say that it is head and shoulders above that level - a wonderful example of what talented filmmakers can do with fixed resources as long as they have a true passion for the story they're telling. It comes through here. Give it a look, it's well worth your time.

They have bodies, and you effectively can't kill them.

Zombie-ness aside, this is otherwise a fairly decent flick. The acting is good for an indie flick. The camerawork is quite adequate (a little over-exposed in the opening scenes, but otherwise quite moody and atmospheric). There it s bit of tension built throughout certain parts of the movie. However, I also felt like the tension wrought by the moodiness and a few of the scenes never actually came to anything. I was honestly expecting things to jump out at any moment. Sadly, they basically never did, and that kind of ruined it for me.

The ending, which I won't give away, reminded me more of an episode of the X-files than of a zombie movie. A pretty solidly earned 3 stars. Decent cinematography, good atmospheric feel, but no zombie gut/brain-munchery, and insufficient payoff in scares / thrills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombies?, March 13, 2008
This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
For the most part I thought that the movie was good. Good group for the mercs. I liked how the group was consistant with the weapons. It appeared to me that the medic and the leader had similar weapons and the rest of the group all had the same type of weapon. Very impressed. They had claymores, why didn't they have greanades? I don't think I would call this a zombie movie though. Supernatural probably. When I think of a zombie movie I think of flesh eating!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good, December 22, 2008

This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
When I first saw the box for this at Walmart I thought it was probably straight to DVD movie that was going to be along the lines of Zombie Strippers and be just trash. Then I watched Punisher War Zone and liked it. When doing some research on Ray Stevenson I saw something about this movie and it said he was in it and that it got pretty favorable reviews. So I decided to give it a chance and purchased it. It suprised the heck out of me. This was a good movie. It was shot well. It was different. It had good acting and it had a good story. It was different from your normal horror movie or your normal zombie movie if that it what you want to catergorize it as. Ray Stevenson is really good in these kind of roles and should be an excellent action/drama star. The guy can act and has a physical and charismatic presence.

I recommend this to horror fans, fans of war pics and just plain action fans. Give it a shot you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outpost is Outstanding!, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
We had serious reservations on buying this straight-to-DVD movie, but the premise and the great actor from HBO's Rome series being the star, gave us enough umph! to purchase this DVD.

And man, are we glad we did!

Outpost is as good, if not better than most high-end Hollywood movies!

Ray Stevenson, (star of HBO's Rome, as well as the new upcoming Punisher movie), is the leading man here leading a group of mixed mercenaries who have been hired to what they believe to be a hidden cache of German SS WWII gold in an underground bunker.

But what they find is so refreshingly cool and legitimate for a supernatural horror/action movie, along with solid acting, directing, and set design that will make you believe - and be astounded - that this wasn't released as a major motion picture. No cheesy B-movie this!

This director should be making high-end Hollywood movies if this is what he can create for a mere 1 million dollars. Just think what he can make with a typical Hollywood budget!

Outpost is not only oustanding, but well worth your time.

I just happened across an advert for this and thought I'd give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. This movie was made with a very low budget but the production values are great. The characters are cliche but are interesting, the dialogue is quick and well written. This is a good horror movie but I'd say it isn't over done when it comes to blood and gore. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of brutal gore, but compared to the rest of the genre it isn't too bad. The setting is moody and the story is interesting enough. While this is certainly a horror movie I can't say I was at any point ever scared, though it made it no less interesting for me to watch. I thought this was a great movie, far better than the limited budget would lead me to believe, for fans of horror, zombie movies and the like it is well worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outpost, April 6, 2010
This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
A group of mercenaries take on an assignment to aid a scientist in uncovering a lost artifact in an Eastern Europe bunker. What they don't know is that the relic was created by the Nazis to bend physics in order to create a super-soldier to win the war, resulting in a legion of undead SS troopers that have been lying dormant for decades... OUTPOST combines the slow-drawn claustrophobia and paranoia of THE BUNKER with the high-powered military action of DOG SOLDIERS in this subtle but effective zombie Suspense / Thriller. It sets a somber mood through its sepia tones and rusted sets, giving the entire film a vintage look that is punctuated by superior lighting and fog effects. Ray Stevenson takes a strong lead as he commands the team against the supernatural forces, while each of the soldiers battling beneath him look and feel like authentic guns for hire caught entirely unaware. Steve Barker handles the psychological thrills with precision, choosing to scare his audience with implied violence and shadowy figures that disappear and reappear in the flickering lamplight rather than exploiting cheap gore FX. OUTPOST is an undermentioned entry in the Nazi zombie cycle that is one of the better films of its kind.

4.0 out of 5 stars SS Zombies! Beware!, January 27, 2009
This review is from: Outpost (DVD)
A veteran group of battle-hardened mercenaries are hired to lead a scientist into the remains of a World War II German bunker. Little do they know, but the money couldn't come close to the price they'll pay for doing the job. Inside the bunker are things no living human was meant to see or know, and these guys have had the bad luck of finding out.

I'm not giving you specifics about the nightmarish secrets and horrors within the bunker. I don't want to spoil potential thrills for those who may watch this little-known gem of a terror tale. I'll only say that the bad guys (or should I say ghouls) in this movie are SS soldiers, of course, and they're also no less than superhuman SS zombies! Yes, you read that right--superhuman SS zombies! This movie has definitely taken the SS to a new level of terror. This movie is complete with secret SS super weapon experiments, creepy relic-filled bunkers, and even fake, albeit realistic SS footage from the past.

This movie is not without its flaws. However, to me, they are very forgiveable. For example, the uniforms, etc. are not always exactly as they should be. The Nazi zombies do wear the black Allgemeine SS uniforms, although they likely shouldn't, but that's just more sinister for the purposes. For all you hardcore fans in-the-know about regulations of the period, this could be a distraction. However, if you're like me, you won't mind that at all. Yes, after all, I'm never really bothered by technical inaccuracies in movies such as this. We're not talking about Valkyrie here, or any other such films about historical events. We're talking about all out war with the undead! Creative license here, I think, is just a necessary and excusable freedom. When it comes to war/horror movies, I'm just happy enough to even have such movies at all.

Outpost certainly holds its own as a unique and original war/horror tale that surprisingly exceeds its lower budget. It effectively delivers everything we want from a movie of its type. There's plenty of blood, lots of carnage, and no shortage of courageous albeit suicidally motivated soldiers. Gore and violence are expectedly gratuitous, as one would expect. If you have a taste for this niche of war/horror, then you'll likely love this one. It's just a good thing that real bullets won't kill the already dead. If that were the case, we'd all be missing quite a lot of fun. Be sure to watch Outpost. Just don't take refuge there.
