4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read, March 29, 2004

This review is from: Outrageous Exposures (Hardcover)
This book is a quick, easy read for anyone who loves mysteries. John Penn expertly alternates between the victims on the day of their disappearance and the subsequent police investigation which takes the reader down a twisted path. Everybody is a suspect, and, although you might figure out the answer before the end of the book, the payoff is worth any previous knowledge the reader may possess.

Chief Inspector Dick Tansey, and his partner, Sargeant Hilary Greenway function like two detectives in a British television mystery: there is a hint of their past lives (more his than hers) and there is an understated current of (...) attraction that mounts as the narrative progresses. The additional mystery here is whether either one will acknowledge their growing feelings or choose to ignore them rather than suffer the increasingly awkward moments the two characters share.

Finally, one aspect of this mystery that works well is that these two detectives allow themselves to be led by the evidence in the wrong direction as more girls in the story are abducted. While this might seem frustrating, it is actually enjoyable. The reader must struggle along with the detectives trying to figure out the identity of the guilty party who happens to drive a blue Ford Escort -- a car most of the suspects (and a large part of England) either own or have access to at some point in the story. It makes the two detectives more human, more fallible, but, utlimately, it makes their ability to solve the crime much more satisfying.
