This review is from: Outrageously Pogo (Paperback)
This collection presents not only reprints of some Pogo strips, but lots more from a fanzine of the 1970s and `80s. The strips present Pogo, Albert, and all the rest in their beloved swamp. Characters other than the usual stars come and go: Tammanany the tiger, P.T. Bridgeport whose word balloons speak only in circus headlines, Deacon Mushrat, and more. Kelly was a keen observer of his political milieu as well, so look-alikes of Spiro Agnew and a few other figures make their appearances.

The real surprise in this volume is the non-Pogo material. Kelly's widow provides biographical information and pictures of Kelly himself. Other material includes topical cartoons from his college days, the Pogo pack supporting the Red Cross and other groups, promotions for the strip, and lots more. The real surprises, though, were some of Kelly's essays (he started in newspapers) and ideas for a strip that never made it. Perhaps it's better that "Skoot" never made it. The strip looked as cute as Pogo, but maybe too cute. I don't see how it could have carried Pogo's political punch.

It's a great collection for anyone who loves Pogo, and especially for those who want to know a little more about the man behind the `possum.
