Disheartened with the state of R&B is a gross understatement. Enter Lalah...the wait between releases has been far too long, but oh so worth the wait. This is arguably one of the best releases of 2004. Her rendition of Forever, For Always, For Love is superb. The tone, and inflection is what separates the master from the student. My other favorites include Better and Better, More, Outrun The Sky, and Boston. On Admit It, there are subtle nuances that remind me of her father and he would certainly be proud of this project. My very favorite song is We Were 2. I don't know if this is something she experienced but she has me convinced. You can feel the pain in her voice. This is a cd I have no problem recommending to everyone I know. I really hope everyone supports this project. She is the perfect image of what's missing in music today. I absolutely love this cd!

I have waited so long for this album....I've been listening to A Moment,Lalah last full length album for the past 10 years and Its still as fresh as it was back then ,but its great to have something new from one of my favorite artists.Lately I've been hearing alot of bad music by basically mediocre singers out today. Its been too long, but I must say,its about time.
My favorite songs are as follows:
1.How many times
2.Admit It
3.Forever,For Always,For love (which is also on the Luther Vandross tribute album)
4.Boston (which I 1st heard on her web site, very sentimental song)
5.More
6.If you Ever
7.We Were 2
8.Outrun The Sky

I'll have to have two copies of this...one for the car another for the house.

Thank you for reminding the world that music can do more than sell jeans & soda...and what the human voice can do when true talent exists and the heart, mind, & soul are aligned! Thank you for showing us how to make a record! My favorites? Right now, Outrun The Sky, Boston, & Stronger are my best friends...but this CD will be keeping me company for a long time to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection..., October 8, 2004

After far too long a wait, Lalah Hathaway's OUTRUN THE SKY is here, and it turns out to be one of the finest releases of the year.

Hathaway wraps her smooth, silky voice around the each melody, giving added dimension to every word- it has become cliche, but this REALLY IS one girl who could sing the telephone book to you, and it would sound wonderful!

And the track selection doesnt disappoint- a few uptempo tracks delight ("Back Then" for example), and then Lalah lays down her superior remake of Luther's "Forever, For Always, For Love", one of the best covers of a Vandross song I have heard.

And they keep coming- she breaks it down on "We Were 2", and the bittersweet "Boston" is a beautiful closing track. But the centerpiece of the album, a definite gem, is title track, an irresistable piece of heartfelt soul. A midtempo track, with organic production, "Outrun the Sky" sparkles with Lalah's wistful lyrics and her assured delivery.

Her father was an undisputed genius, and now Lalah Hathaway is moving towards sharing the same regard...OUTRUN THE SKY is highly recommended...

4.0 out of 5 stars Saaaaaaaang, Lalah, sanggggg!!!, October 3, 2004

If your voice sounds this good it's ridiculous why it takes you 10 yrs to put out new music. I was driving in the car on Friday & I heard like 2 bars of Forever, For always... & instantly turned it up full blast, I knew it was Lalah. No one can sound like her. She shouldn't even talk, she should just sing everything she has to say! This album is right on time. That's for sure. I strongly recommend you getting 2 copies 1 for you and 1 for a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE WAIT IS OVER - HERE SHE IS WITH HERS!!!!, October 1, 2004

This is the best R&B/Soul album to come out in quite a while. As a long time fan of Lalah's, I'd expect nothing but quality music, and that's exactly what this is!! This is her first pure solo project sine "A Moment" 10 years ago. All of her great collaborative works since "A Moment" were enough to hold me over, but now she has regaled us once again with an epic solo project that has me as floored as "A Moment" 10 myears ago. "How Many Times" and "Better & Better" are a couple of solid mid-tempo grooves that reminded me of what it means to be a fan of this woman's music. As a listener in this age of a lack of musical artism and creativity, I'm typically not one for re-makes, bu her rendition of Luther's classic "Forever, For Always, For Love" is right on the money. Her ballads on this CD, from the soulful "If U Ever", to the somber and poignant "Boston" and even the title track "Outrun the Sky" are unique, masterful, and top-notch examples of Lalah's talents as both a singer and writer. This CD is a must for everyone - from Lalah's legion of loyal fans to anyone just looking for a quality soul album. Lalah: if you happen to read this, I'm so glad to be an owner of this CD - you really should do this more often. Thanks girl - we love ya!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience the Hathaway..., January 10, 2005
This review is from: Outrun the Sky (Audio CD)
I heard Lalah Hathaway many, many years ago... I heard Lalah for the "first" time on The Song Lives On... I have heard Lalah once again with her latest endeavor, Outrun the Sky. Lalah is here to stay in my world. Her rendition of Luther Vandross' Forever, For Always, For Love is simply delicious. There is no other word. Other velvety goodies include Better and Better, Boston and the title track. How Many Times is a great way to start things off.

Allow Lalah to co-host a comfortable gathering with friends or relax with her bundled up in the evening hours. If you do nothing else, please sample Track No. 4. However you do it, whenever you do it - experience the second generation Hathaway... That's all I can say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lalah Hathaway has singer's DNA..., August 2, 2005
This review is from: Outrun the Sky (Audio CD)
Being the child of a legendary singer and choosing the same profession can be difficult. For Lalah Hathaway, the daughter of legendary singer Donny Hathaway, who's listed as a musical influence by famous artists in every music genre, it would seem both an enormous blessing and a burden to exist in the shadow of such an icon. But somehow, Hathaway handles the weight of her lineage with grace and integrity. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she's undeniably talented in her own right.

Last year, Hathaway released her third record, "Outrun the Sky," which marked the welcome return of this exceptional singer, who's fans have been waiting 10 years for a new release. If her large, active website community of about 500 enthusiasts is any indication, her audience hasn't diminished in the least between albums. Instead, they've eagerly scooped up any recording featuring a single note from Hathaway. In the years since her last record, she's been featured on a number of notable recordings from other artists, including Grover Washington, Wayman Tisdale, Marcus Miller, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Joe Sample.

Outrun the Sky displays Hathaway's jazzy, hearty voice perfectly, as she can do a torch singer ballad as well as she does an uptempo R&B groove. Evidence of this can be found on the album's first two singles, the Luther Vandross tribute, "Forever, For Always, For Love, which is arguably better than the original, and the crazy in love, upbeat track "Better and Better."

While on record Hathaway sounds absolutely flawless, her live performances are an even greater representation of her voice and spirit. On stage, Hathaway is luminous. Her voice is impeccable live, and watching her sing is like receiving a giant shot of oxygen. Just ask her online supporters, who repeatedly come out to see her shows all over the globe, some traveling great distances to experience a singer they regard with the same iconic eminence as her father.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical voice, September 5, 2005
By
This review is from: Outrun the Sky (Audio CD)
Lalah has a magical voice. She's the daughter of Donny Hathaway and the talent obviously runs in the family. I really like the music (don't love it all), but it's her voice that's the most captivating. It's been too long between albums and I hope it won't be so long next time. I love the Luther Vandross song and my other favourite is Boston. If you like soothing, soulful music, then this is for you. She's a great talent and she's always getting better.
