Very inspiring,
By Baker Betty "Tries to cook" (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Outrunning My Shadow: Surviving Open-Heart Surgery and Battling Obesity/The Decision to Change My Life (Paperback)
I picked this book up and did not put it down until I turned the last page. If you are overweight, you will relate. If you are unhealthy (but not willing to admit it out loud), you will relate. However, if you are thin, and don't understand the overweight population, you need to read this book, so you can relate. This book left me feeling; if he can do it, I can do it. This book also provides great insight to the inner workings of our bodies and what we need to achieve balance both physically and mentally. Thank you for sharing your story.

I finished reading Keith's book yesterday. I found it to be totaly awesome. Everything he wrote about has made me realize that I need to quite smoking, eat better and become more fit for myself as well as those I love. I have thought about these things but never did anything about it until I read what he went through. It brought back alot of memories of what my father went through when he had his quadruple bypass surgery done in February, 1974. Keith is an extrodinary man who must be commended for the great accomplishments he has overcome. He is an inspiration to me. His book should be on everyone's number 1 list.

Biggest Winner - Keith Ahrens,

This review is from: Outrunning My Shadow: Surviving Open-Heart Surgery and Battling Obesity/The Decision to Change My Life (Paperback)
Every January we're bombarded with weight loss commercials and advertisements to lose weight now with the help of "this 30-day meal plan" or "that shake"; "this piece of equipment", or "that exercise video". Keith's story came to us quietly in the local Las Vegas newspaper, humbly telling his story and mentioning his book. I was very intrigued at what Keith had accomplished, so I purchased this book and I'm very glad that I did. Keith went through a life-changing experience: open heart surgery and he survived. That he decided to share his story is a gift to us and that makes him the biggest winner in my book. Loving to eat food is not something you can just "give up." With physician's help and self-determination, one can "quit" smoking, for instance (hopefully), however we can agree that we simply can't "quit" eating. Keith, however, learned how to eat healthier, smaller portions and incorporate exercise into his life...the weight loss formula of success "eat less and move more." It's hard to lose weight. Keith lost a lot of weight. Plus he recovered from major surgery. Let this book be inspirational for you. Motivate yourself to accomplish your goals. Seize the day. Thanks, Keith, for the reminder!

Many of the facts in this book can be obtained from other books or your very own Doctor. What you will not find anywhere else is Keith's personal story.
Whether your struggle is your own or that of a friend or loved one. I recommend this book as a guide to helping yourself and those you love. Keith's journey and his depiction of it is amazing and inspirational to say the least. Thank you for sharing your story!

Keith's book is a wonderful inspiration and is really easy to read. He takes you through his journey of learning about his serious heart condition and the steps he took to survive. His positive outlook on life and relationship with friends helped him get to where he is now. This is a great book for anyone, over weight or not, about dedication, hard work, and a positive mental attitude. He also offers some great info about cholesterol, blood pressure and heart rate. A definite must, especially if you are struggling with obesity!
