Icemaker broke in our fridge. So, instead of buying a replacement fridge for $2500 to $3000, we decided to "rough" it and make our own cubes to extend the life of our current 14 year old fridge which has already been repaired once. We long ago tossed out our old plastic type ice cube trays.

I purchased this product after examining the options available on Amazon to round out an order to more than $25 to get free shipping.

Wifey complained right away that this was too expensive and that I was "taken". As I tell her, see first two sentences of this review.

First con is that it is somewhat expensive compared to the alternatives. Second con is that it seems to take longer (much longer) to freeze the water into cubes (probably due to the larger sectional density of the cube shape). At first, I broke a lot of water center cubes trying to squeeze them out too soon before they were frozen completely through. Third con is that each cube must be pushed out of the tray individually. They do push out easily as the tray remains very pliable and flexible even at sub freezing temperatures. I haven't tried a lubricant for the tray; I was going to experiment but the wifey is watching too closely.

Pros:

- cubes last much longer than the normal icemaker half moon cubes. Again, I assume it is due to greater sectional density. Icemaker cubes did not last through the first drink. I routinely get two cool drinks out of a set of cubes and sometimes a half of a third before the cubes melt away. This is a tremendous advantage with some drinks (single malt Scotch for instance) that you really do not want watered down. Also, I use a half glass of these hexagonal cubes instead of a full glass of the icemaker half moon shape cubes.

Easier to get whole cubes from this tray than any of the plastic or metal trays I've ever used(dozens). Just don't expect to be able to twist and have the cubes fall out. I push each cube out from the back using my thumbs. It's not the quickest, but at least I get complete cubes instead of partial cubes and a bunch of fragments like I do with the plastic or metal ones. You do have to support it from underneath while they are filled with water because they are very flexible. That's no problem for me as my hand is large enough to support it. The hexagonal cubes are a novelty for visitors.

I bought these ice cube trays because, first, I needed some smaller ice cube trays (our freezer is packed) and second, I thought they looked cool. The first couple batches of ice cubes I made were fine. I used them in some mixed drinks I made. It was on the next couple of batches when I started to notice something strange. The cubes were used in my water bottle that I use when I go running. After taking a couple of sips is when it hit me -- there was a funny "frost" or "artificial plastic" taste in the water. I smelled the empty trays and voila' -- there was the smell. I have washed them, soaked them in bleach water but to no avail -- the smell and yucky tasting ice cubes prevail. Does anyone else notice this to? I love the idea and the shape of the cubes bit if it produces a crappy tasting product I have no choice but to give it a bad rating.

The cubes (or hexes?) lose their unusual shapeliness after only a few minutes in water. However, the tray still works pretty darn well and I have no problems using this on a day to day basis.

I picked one of these up at Marshalls for $6, loving the hex design. It requires a flat surface in the fridge, otherwise the ice cubes won't have perfectly straight sides. We don't use ice for much, just cocktails, but it works nicely. We don't have an ice maker in our freezer, so I just make a batch every few days and store excess in a sealable plastic container in the freezer. When the cubes are on bourbon, I do not taste anything, however I made a batch of cosmo jello shots in this, and found that they had a weird fridge taste. I stuck it in the dishwasher after that though and haven't experienced it again. I like it enough that I'm buying another one and would recommend to a friend.

Really wanted to like this. Being a former chemistry major I have a nerdy inclination towards hexagonal shapes and anything that resembles a skeletal formula so I had to have this tray. The first few batches were fine, silicon made it easy to remove the ice, the cute hexagonal cubes received compliments from guests, and were a perfect size to fit my water bottles. After a few batches though the ice began to give off a very off-putting artificial taste/smell that ruined any drink I made with them. At first I thought it may be my freezer, but after testing other trays realized this guy was the culprit. Back to regular ice cube trays for me.

I needed an ice cube tray and wanted to try these out. These are awesome and I love the ice cubes these make in the glass. They look awesome. The only rub is that the cubes are difficult to push out of the tray due to their shape. Most cubes have a rounded end that makes it easier to dislodge from the tray. These do not, but I have to say I don't even know if you could remove the ice cubes from a hard plastic tray.

All in all the final ice cubes are so awesome I could care less about the tray issues.
