Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Realistic prose, graphic sex, and complex plotting mark the debut of this talented newcomer. Lesbian policewoman Cameron "Cam" Andrews, known for her heroic antidrug stance, surprises everyone when she steals evidence in a drug case. Sent to women's prison, she faces both physical and mental hardship but takes advantage of her position to expose drug dealing and capture a murderer?perfect cover for CIA-trained Cam. While D'Arnuk's gutsy narrative should find a ready audience among fans of thrillers, her descriptions of sexual bondage may offend a few.

From Kirkus Reviews

Major drugs are moving through Maryland's Hagerville State Correctional Facility, and the DEA needs a woman inside. Their choice is Cameron Andrews, a decorated Baltimore cop whose hatred of drugs goes back to her brother's fatal overdose, and whose lesbianism makes her a natural candidate to infiltrate the tight- knit prison ``family'' that's directing the traffic. Before she can go undercover at Hagerville, though, Cam has to be drilled, hardened, and discredited, and tearing her apart brings out first-novelist D'Arnuk's real passion. In a long, long flashback, Cam undergoes a rigorous psychological indoctrination that makes Marine boot camp look like Camp Fire Girls, and learns to enjoy getting cuffed for sex by her shapely martial-arts instructor Michael Gauchet. It's knowledge that'll prove unexpectedly useful when Cam's finally shipped off to Hagerville and finds that sleeping with a serious masochist is her quickest route to the cocaine that flows through the prison as easily as dishwater. But the story lags when Cam, unsatisfied with a lower-level bust that's put her in the hospital, insists on going back into Hagerville to nab the faceless lady at the top of the food chain. The scenes of Cam's training and prison life shout tough, tough, tough. Once she gets down to undercover detection, though, Cam seems all stripped down with nowhere to go. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Fascinating - Couldn't Put it Down!, December 19, 2005
This review is from: Outside in: A Cameron Andrews Mystery (Paperback)
Darnuk's writing ability is exceptional in the area of short story. This book has taste when introducing lesbianism between a believable character cop and her control lover. Cameron's experience in prison pulls the reader into the reality of life in prison. A "can not put down" book. Recommended for those who enjoy an intense mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outside In: A Cameron Andrews Mystery is Outstanding!, January 4, 2011
This review is from: Outside in: A Cameron Andrews Mystery (Paperback)
D'Arnuk has produced an exceptionally well rounded mystery with characters who take the reader on a deep and intense crime dialogue that will satisfy any readers taste for undercover crime solving. The author captures the readers attention from the first page to the last, detailing Detective Andrew's struggle to maintain her true identity while portraying a "cop gone bad". While Andrews learns the "rules" to survival, she falls in love with Michael, the one woman who will give her a reason to stay alive.

Full of action and suspense, D'Arnuk has shown her talent in the world of writing. Written for those who enjoy drama, action, leather and a twist to romance.

Readers should find time to read in one setting as this book is incredibly hard to put down!

I hope to see more of D'Arnuk's writing in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leather erotica on a "Lesbian whodunnit" superstructure., August 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Outside in: A Cameron Andrews Mystery (Paperback)
The characters are believeable, the situations are satisfyingly graphic if erotic bondage is what satisfies you, and the dramatic tension works fairly well. The ratio of erotica to whodunnit was too strong for my taste: instead of illuminating the characterizations, it floodlit and overwhelmed them. This book should be marketed as "erotica", not "mystery". With that caveat in mind, enjoy it for what it's worth: a middling good mystery story with lots of kinky sex.
