Book Description

How can a kangaroo jump nearly nine meters (twenty-seven feet) in one bound? What happens when a kangaroo's teeth wear out from grinding up plants? How can a kangaroo baby survive when it's no bigger than a bumblebee at birth? Outside and Inside Kangaroos answers all these questions and many others. With stunning color photographs of kangaroos -- from developing babies to adults -- and clear, accessible text, Sandra Markle invites children to learn all about these unique and fascinating creatures.

Curious young readers will delight in this close look at kangaroos -- from the inside out!

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Markle does her usual thorough job in this discussion about kangaroos: the different types; how their bones, muscles, and tails enable them to jump; and how their physiology helps them live in the desert heat. In an engaging style, she describes how and what these animals eat and digest. She discusses their social organization and how they mate and raise their young. The life cycle, from embryo up to the day a joey first leaves its mother's pouch, is shown. As with the other titles in the series, the book is illustrated with clear, full-color photos showing the inside as well as the outside of the animal. It is unfortunate that there is no note for children on how they were taken, as some of them look like the animal might have been dissected. Nevertheless, there is much information for reports or for browsers here. A "Looking Back" section asks readers to look again at some of the photos and offers additional information about what is going on in them.

From Booklist

This Outside and Inside series title introduces kangaroos, their diet, behavior, life cycles, and physical makeup. From the onset, the prose is engaging, incorporating direct address and well-chosen questions to encourage thought and participation. The scientific explanations are concise; descriptive comparisons kids can relate to effectively convey aspects such as size and how kangaroo muscles work, with suggested exercises to further aid comprehension. Simply written but never condescending, the book reads like a lively dialogue in which many interesting facts and ideas are exchanged. Abundant full-color photos of kangaroos are fascinating and explicative, although vivid close-ups of the "insides" (stomach, heart, womb, for example) are not for the squeamish. A "Looking Back" section includes additional facts and questions, inviting fresh scrutiny of the photos and information. Italicized words in text appear in the combination glossary-index. Overall, an excellent, accessible scientific study of kangaroos for kids. Shelle Rosenfeld

1.0 out of 5 stars Outside and Inside Kangaroos, December 15, 1999
This review is from: Outside and Inside Kangaroos (Hardcover)
Although this book contains incredible photographs I am reviewing it unfavorably based on the age range (4-8). I bought it to use in a Kindergarten classroom. The pictures are too explicit revealing internal organs, stomach and undigested food, the womb, leg muscles and tendons. Luckily, I looked at it before putting it in the classroom. I feel that the students would have been frightened, not only by the graphic nature of the pictures but also by wondering how the pictures were taken. Akin to a dissection book. Definitely for older children and even then, for those not squeamish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rather unique look at kangaroos. Good book if you can get it., March 23, 2011
This review is from: Outside and Inside Kangaroos (Hardcover)
This is a very interesting, unique book about kangaroos. It shows you both the regular shots of kangaroos, along with interesting text, but also, you get a firsthand look at the anatomy, muscles, heart, womb, embryo, joey, etc. of the kangaroo. This is good for the future (child) veteranarian, or doctor. It is a good book to introduce the concept of an embryo or fetus to a child as well. This book is unique, I'd never seen anything like it in the classroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Purposfully explicit, January 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Outside and Inside Kangaroos (Hardcover)
The beauty of this series is the slightly gruesome nature of the photographs. While adults may wrinkle their noses and say "Ick," elementary school children find them very appealing. Kids especially enjoy knowing their elders are "grossed out" by the pictures!
