Book Description

6 and up1 and upOutstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12
Have you ever wished that you could unwrap a mummy? Imagine examining the skin, bones, even muscles and organs of a person who lived thousands of years ago! Cutting-edge technology is revealing more than ever before about these amazing relics from human history. Modern crime lab technology can reveal whether a mummy was killed or died of natural causes. X-rays can help us discover a mummy’s age and identity, and DNA samples are even helping scientists find today’s living relatives of Incan mummies. In the most fascinating topic she’s unraveled in her Outside and Inside series, Sandra Markle reunites us with our ancient ancestors through fascinating text and jaw-dropping photographs.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Markle explores a global smorgasbord of mummy varieties, both those created by human procedures and those caused by nature. Crisp (if gruesome) color photos accompany the readable, informative text, which discusses not only the mummification process, but also the cutting-edge technologies used by forensic anthropologists and others to study the mummies themselves. From endoscopies to CT scans, through scanning electron microscopes to acid washes and DNA analysis, the author presents an up-to-date look at modern forensics applied to ancient human remains. A new glimpse into a long-ago world.–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Another title from Markle's long-running Outside and Inside series, this bright photo-essay accents the inside of mummies. Exciting new technology has made it possible to tell how ancient people lived and died. Vivid photographs, sometimes eye-popping in their clarity (CT images), sometimes gross (mummified intestines and intestinal worms), combine with a highly readable text to answer questions about particular bodies and humanity in general. There's a bit of an organizational problem. Dividing the book into chapters would have helped, as the text moves through various diagnostic techniques and different mummies, some from Egypt, others--naturally preserved. One of the most interesting sections concerns the discoveries that can be made from examining DNA. Back matter includes a glossary and a project--make your own mummy. There are acknowledgments to many scientists and health and academic centers, but no source notes. Ilene Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars mummies, May 15, 2007
This review is from: Outside and Inside Mummies (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) (Hardcover)
This book will teach you all you need to know about mummies. It includes
facts about how mummies are made. Sandra Markle shares her research on
mummies. It also teaches you about the ways to tell how old the mummies
are.

This book is easy-to-read, informative, well-illustrated, and fun. It
included full color photos of real mummies

We would recommend this book to kids ages 9-12 who would like to read
and
learn more about mummies. The book is filled with lots of great
information that I didn't know and I feel that I learned a lot from this book.

This review is from: Outside and Inside Mummies (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) (Hardcover)
'Outside and Inside' books are great! My daugther (5th gade) has asked me to buy about five 'Outside & Inside' books so far. (giant squid, killer bees, mummies, birds & bats) She loves them. The pictures can be a bit graphic in places, so I can't recommend them for very young children, but your 2nd grade and up kidos who like to be 'grossed-out' occasionally will love them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Awesome pictures, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Outside and Inside Mummies (Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12) (Hardcover)
This is great for any kid interested in just what happens when people dig up those mummies. It goes into all the science of dating and research with bright pictures to show all the details. I also liked the instructions for creating one's own mummy.
