Biography

Patti Smith is considered a poet whose energy and vision found its voice in the most powerful medium of our culture, music. As one of the early pioneers of New York City’s dynamic punk scene, she has been creating her unique blend of poetic rock and roll for over 35 years. She was born in Chicago in 1946, the eldest of four siblings and was raised in South Jersey. From an early age, she ... Read more in Amazon's Patti Smith Store

Editorial Reviews

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, Patti Smith's first career-spanning single CD collection, OUTSIDE SOCIETY, contains 18 signature songs, remastered from all ten of Smith's studio albums. The chronologically arranged tracks move from her 1975 debut album, Horses ("Gloria", "Free Money"), through her last release in 2007, Twelve ("Smells Like Teen Spirit"). The liner notes features brief recollections of each song written by Patti, who personally supervised the song choices.

Patti Smith is a poet. A singer. A revolutionary. An icon. Every note she sings and every word she writes is loaded with so much meaning the listener is left with the feeling that she/he must do something. Laugh, scream, cry, speak out- it doesn't matter what you do, just do it. She is an artist that incites rebellion and introspection at the same time, and every album is filled with stories of where and who she was at that time, leaving one the feeling of having just read Smith's diary in a most public way. She is the embodiment of personal as political.

That being said, Outside Society had to be a difficult undertaking for Smith. To pare down a life's work to 18 songs, and still maintain integrity, hardly seems possible in the case of such a prolific artist. She has, of course, accomplished just that-because she is Patti Smith, superwoman for who all things are possible. Although the album seems somewhat scattered and disjointed, it really is a great snapshot and showcase of her work. Outside Society could just as easily be called 'Patti Smith for Dummies,' with its chronological exploration of the most listener-friendly songs in Smith's collection. This is by no means a bad thing; it is just not for anyone already familiar with her work.

It is an album complete with the songs that started it all, such as "Gloria," and "Dancing Barefoot," as well as her most famous radio hit (on which she collaborated with Bruce Springsteen) "Because the Night." Also included in the compilation are her renditions of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Roger McGuinn's "So You Wanna Be a Rock Star." Although Smith is nothing but original herself, she has become recognized as an artist who honors what others' songs mean to her by covering them with the utmost respect.

Good idea to do a single-disc best-of spanning Patti's whole career. Also tough. What to put in? Only got 80 minutes.

Two surprising omissions are title tracks: "Horses" and "Gone Again". Why they're missing when room was made for covers of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star" is a mystery. Those first two songs are Patti originals and better examples of her art. Check them out on their own CDs.

Punk insofar as the chords her group started out playing were few and the rhythms straightforward. As a young woman releasing her debut in 1975 she had all of that generation's want for transcendence and ecstasy but none of the flowers - she pissed in that river with a fury in her voice, steadily roaring and skewing her poetic lines to make that want felt. She was an outsider in the way poets usually are - so much so that even widely criticized metaphors are insisted upon in this newly curated collection. Fortunately her most self-indulgent art rock is out, focusing our newfound enthusiasm on the catchy stuff, which happens to be fiercely political and personal as well; not that she makes a difference.

This collection is not just for the novice seeking a glimpse of the Goddess of punk rock. I have all the original albums and bought Outside Society to have a good listening experience again since the original pressing are frankly a bit worn out. CD'are OK, but listening to vinyl brings it all back for me. The remastering is excellent and the band sounds as good as possible. But it is really all about Patti. A true gift to the world. Thanks Patti!

I'm quite unsure of how to star this album. On one hand, the CD itself had no problems and the papercase is sturdy. On the other hand, I don't really adore this album.

I read Patti Smith's book Just Kids and really enjoyed it. I wanted to get a taste of her music, and thought this compilation would be a good place to start. It spanned her career, which was obvious even to a newbie like me. The songs seemed to be all over the place musically. In the end, I only loved two songs (the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' cover, which was very well done, and 'Because the Night' which is a classic that stands the test of time). Some tracks like 'Dancing Barefoot' and 'Trampin' were nice to listen to, but don't stand out in my memory. This album isn't music one can just listen to in the background. It's very busy and dominates a room. However, her music isn't able to draw me in to the point where I will sit down and listen to it with 100% of my focus.

Some songs were live and had talking before them. I'm not a prude, but this is an album I would be selective in letting other people hear. Quotes like, "I measure the success of the night by the way by the way by the amount of piss and seed I consume" and choruses consisting purely of the N-word were jarring for me. I understand that these songs were written in a different time, so I'm not docking stars off just for that.

Price wise this album is cheaper than the Amazon MP3 version Outside Society and I got a digital download too. It's a good deal. I don't regret this purchase, but I'm glad I didn't pay much more.
