5.0 out of 5 stars Historic and Magnificent, April 16, 2010
This review is from: The Outsider, and Others (Hardcover)
I have always told myself that this is a book I do not need because the text is so corrupt, either by Derleth's poor editing or by someone's inability to read clearly Lovecraft's handwriting in his autograph manuscripts. Then, last year, as I was sitting with Maryanne K. Snyder in front of the Hollywood Theatre waiting for The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival to begin, a friend came to join us and shew'd us some books that he was selling, one of which was a pristine copy of THE OUTSIDER AND OTHERS; and I have to confess that I felt the book's aura and allure. It is a magickal tome. I sat there, looking at the book, and I tried to imagine what the reaction must have been, among Lovecraft's many friends, to see this beautiful edition of their friend's fiction finally in print. Most of them probably knew of Lovecraft's failed attempts to get a collection of his own published in his lifetime, however often publishers contacted him shewing some slight interest in such a collection. Derleth's detractors are many, but one cannot deny that the publication of this book was an historical event, a wonderful experience, and that it began Lovecraft's slow rise as a famous American writer.

The title of the book is from Lovecraft, who told Farnsworth Wright, when that editor of Weird Tales proposed publishing a collection of Lovecraft's tales, that Lovecraft's choice for book title was The Outsider and Others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A legendary book, February 27, 2010
This review is from: The Outsider, and Others (Hardcover)
This is the first Arkham House book and the first Lovecraft collection. Over the years it has become a much sought after book by collectors and a legend among Lovecrat's fans. Even though it doesn't contain the corrected texts by S. T. Joshi, it is the most important Lovecraft collection ever published. The cover by Virgil Finlay is beautiful and it's still the best ever made for a Lovecraft book.
