More About the Author

The primary question I receive is, why would anyone write so many accounting books? The story began in the early 1990s, when my former boss, Jan Roehl-Anderson, asked me to assist in taking over a book called Controllership from Jim Willson (correct spelling), who had been maintaining the book since the early 1950s. I liked the experience, and even found it relaxing (I must have issues!).

So... I had an idea for another book, called Just-in-Time Accounting, which the publisher accepted, and which got me on the track of doing management accounting books. Most accounting books up to that point had primarily dealt with accounting principles and not how to management the department, so this was a rich area for new books.

The Accounting Best Practices book, which is one of the top-selling accounting books in the country, started when I was bouncing around ideas for new books with one of my editors, John DeRemigis. He suggested the accounting best practices idea, and I said, "nah, there's not enough material." Four editions later and over 400+ pages long, it appears that he was right and I was wrong.

Writing became more intense in 2005, when John Wiley & Sons recommended me to the authors of the Wiley GAAP Guide as a new co-author. This is a seriously technical high-end accounting principles guide, and so was nothing like what I had written before. My first assignment was adding a hundred or so new examples to the book, which was absolutely frantic -- imagine becoming an expert on a really far-out accounting topic in one day, writing an esoteric example, and then hurrying on to an entirely different example the next day.

I have just finished writing Accounting Controls Best Practices, which is chock-full of control points for the most common accounting systems, as well as for best practices upgrades to those systems. And now, it is time for a break, if only for a week.

So... I am heading to the Western Pacific for some serious diving off a live aboard dive boat.

Steve Bragg

5.0 out of 5 stars Most complete book on Outsourcing, April 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Outsourcing: A Guide to...Selecting the Correct Business Unit...Negotiating the Contract...Maintaining Control of the Process (Paperback)
This book is the most complete and organized book written on outsourcing to date. While other books of the same topic focus specifically on one job function, Steven Bragg expertly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing for each business unit, from Accounting to Engineering to IT, and so on. Whether you're a General Manager, CFO, CIO, or a Materials Manager, no other text can substitute for the wealth of knowledge found this book. Bragg also provides the reader with an excellent analysis of detailed legal and contractual issues for each department. Every manager responsible for making an outsourcing decision must keep this book by his or her side!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Guide to....wasting your money, January 14, 2003
This review is from: Outsourcing: A Guide to...Selecting the Correct Business Unit...Negotiating the Contract...Maintaining Control of the Process (Paperback)
Absolutely worthless book. An attempt to make a guide for all possible outsourcing situations -and as a result it gives few ideas and nothing really useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Topical Subject - Outsourcing, January 3, 2001
By
This review is from: Outsourcing: A Guide to...Selecting the Correct Business Unit...Negotiating the Contract...Maintaining Control of the Process (Paperback)
This is a great book to understand Outsourcing, why you need it, when you need it and how to do it successfully. The book guides you through;

(1) The Advantages and Disadvantages of Outsourcing. (The basic rationale of the decision) (2) Contract-specific issues. (Legal, strategic impact, etc) (3) Transition issues. (Employment contracts, timelines, personnel) (4) Creating Control Points. (So you know what's going on) (5) Measuring the outsourced function. (Milestone events and performance tracking) (6) Managing the outsourced function. (Show optimal management type for every function) (7) Potential customer service issues. (Also applies to Internal Customers, the employees) (8) Getting out of the outsourcing arrangement. (You need to put it in the contract)

Interestingly enough, every function can be outsourced, either partially or completely. (Yes, even YOUR job!). Take a proactive approach. Buy the book, absorb the knowledge and be part of the solution rather than the problem. In addition to being an excellent author, Mr. Bragg "walks the talk". He's not an academician telling us how things could be but rather an experienced professional who understands how things work in the real world. A rare talent. You need this book. Rated A+++
