Book Description

December 29, 2009
A vital new job search approach customized for people over forty- from the author of 60 Seconds & You're Hired!

With unemployment hitting all time highs, the over- forty crowd is struggling to land new jobs. America's top career counselor offers her market-tested program that shows readers how to effectively stand out and appeal to employers amid age discrimination and floods of competition.

In Over 40 & You're Hired!, Robin Ryan will inspire readers to jump-start their careers and secure new, better-paying jobs. She encourages them to tap into the 'hidden job market' (where 80 percent of all jobs are found), explains how to create targeted resumes and master the interview, and outlines how to overcome any age-related stereotypes they may encounter in their job hunt. Ryan has created a guide of valuable advice and detailed explanations culled from over twenty years of experience as a career counselor that people over forty will find indispensible as they look for work.

This audiobook includes a Bonus CD featuring models from the book of resumes and cover letters.

Additional Bonus Feature: Get access to Robin's website that includes charts, tools, extra job search resources and more, all extra material that is not included in the book or audio.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Ryan (60 Seconds & You're Hired!) offers authoritative advice for the over-40 job hunter, and in the process supplies tips that would be useful for anyone (or everyone, these days) looking for work. Addressing those entering the job market after a hiatus—those recently laid off from a long-term position or who have been staying home with children— she cautions, Times have changed, and you must, too. With suggestions gleaned from a survey of 600 hiring managers across the country, Ryan emphasizes the computer and Internet proficiencies universally demanded, shares tools for job searching online, advises job candidates to get a makeover to look more professional, and—in the book's most useful sections—shows how to fine-tune a résumé (she advises that each résumé and cover letter be tailored to the particular job and that the job title be explicitly listed in a career objective line). Her suggestions are candid, sensible, and refreshingly specific. With actual examples of résumés and cover letters, a résumé quiz and a companion Web site with salary tools and other online resources, this book is essential reading for job seekers. (Jan.)

From Booklist

Statistics don’t lie. Despite recessionary gloom and doom, jobs do exist—and baby boomers, thanks to their work ethic, sheer numbers, and a host of other factors, are more than capable of landing new positions. Boston-based career counselor and author (60 Seconds and You’re Hired! 1994) Ryan insists that the 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old has more than a fighting chance to compete in the marketplace—proven by a number of actual case histories. Her hunting techniques, though not all that differentiated, are presented logically and with enthusiasm and are accompanied by plenty of examples. Make sure you craft a 60-second sell (that is, your credentials)—and nail it for presentations. Update your appearance in the right ways. Skirt salary requirements by doing basic research. Look for hidden jobs through networks and social media, not cold calling and mass mailings. Information on interviewing and salary negotiations is somewhat condensed, though she does refer readers to her Web site. Positive reinforcement and a foundation for the jobs ahead of us. --Barbara Jacobs --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prayers Answered!, January 4, 2010

Finally -- a book that recognizes the difference between a first-time job seeker and a seasoned professional! I just read this book over the holidays, and it has changed my whole approach... I've re-written (and re-thought) everything, from my resume & cover letter to the way I am conducting my search. This book just oozes credibility and effectiveness...I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Thank - you, Robin Ryan! Expect to be hearing from me soon!

2.0 out of 5 stars No new information - just a rehash, January 5, 2011
This book was a big disappointment. The "tips" and wisdom from the best career coach fell short of my expectations. She assumes that everyone over 40 is a high-level professional. Sorry, but that is not always the case. I found no new information in here - no good suggestions on how to update a resume either.

I was just amazed that she also quoted herself - in her own book - at the beginning of every chapter! There are lots of other good choices out there - don't waste your money!

4.0 out of 5 stars I recommend the book., February 15, 2011
I got the book from the library, so definitely was worth the price (!) and used it as a guide to redoing my son's resume and cover letter. Then I made him practice the interview questions (not the ones for over 40, but most of this book works for everyone).

He has had several interviews since we redid the resume. In his line of work, I think that means he got to the top of the pile of probably 1000 resumes! He also said he feels more comfortable in interviewing since he practiced answering some of the questions with his girlfriend.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Employers are being total jerks because they know they can do it, people will put up with multiple interviews and grueling sessions to get a job. (Ah, for the good old days when they just hired you if you could breathe.) So, even though you are the same potential employee with or without a good cover letter and interview practice sessions, you have to do this stuff to get hired.

Very sad. But I do think the recommendations in this book work, as he wasn't getting any interviews before (even though he really didn't have a bad resume). Still doesn't have a job, but we're hopeful. I was a hiring manager in the 1990 recession, and I probably got 600 resumes for every engineering job opening at that time. I know that you throw out boring resumes really fast when you have a pile of 1000 to go through.

READ IT.
