A Veterans View, April 24, 2008
This review is from: Over By Christmas (Paperback)
I have read "Over By Christmas" and find it both entertaining and informative.
As a novel, it has all the suspense and pathos of any well told story. But, being developed with the background of World War I it was also educational. As an American veteran of World War II, I can appreciate many of the military situations and emotions brought forth so vividly.
I have written, myself of my war experiences, having published two books about my Bomber Group and its history. I have also written a Book about a local commercial cave, "Cathedral Caverns." I have also published a book titled, "Tales of Huntsville Caves," which is semi-historic and anecdotal about many caves in Huntsville, Alabama area.

Glorious account of love amidst a world at war, April 17, 2008
This review is from: Over By Christmas (Paperback)
Over By Christmas
Here is a magnificent work of romance and war by a British author who knows what he's writing about. Ex-Royal Navy officer William Daysh has captured the sweep and vastness of World War One sea battles, when the English Navy was supreme and Germany was determined to destroy it. His wonderfully-described scenes of thunderous naval duels are counterpoint to a story of love between the British Prime Minister and the young Venetia Stanley, an emotionally-ripping affair that caught him just as Britain was going to war in 1914. From the book: "The direction of Britain's war effort was...in the hands of decision makers wracked by divisive argument, led by a lovelorn Prime Minister plagued by emotional distractions."
It is the story also of a young Royal Navy gunner coming of age through intense tragedy and his own journey through life, love, and betrayal. Daysh's combat scenes are some of the very best I have ever read, the tender moments among the principals are lovely, and his gift for details and dialogue make "Over By Christmas" a splendid adventure. A grand tale such as this is the result of masterly talent and, without question, extensive research and dedication to crafting a terrific book. It's fun to imagine what actors will play which parts when "Over By Christmas" comes to the big screen, as it truly deserves.

A compelling tale, January 2, 2010
This review is from: Over By Christmas (Paperback)
As I started to read this story of the First World War battles, romance and politics I was reminded of one of my favourite authors Patrick O'Brian. Those of you who have read him will know the kind of great story teller he was and the historical accuracy he brought to all his books.
Over by Christmas has yet another dimension, not only is it a naval classic, but it describes vividly the man at the helm in this terrible war. The British Prime Minister's obsession with a younger woman not only dominated his judgement but laid him open to the most dangerous of security risks.
Some historical works can be dreary but this isn't one of them, the author is sensitive and skilful in his description of the affair and the parallel story of an ordinary woman and her love of a naval gunner.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by William Daysh and recommend it most strongly, my only regret is I have turned the last page and I hope there is a sequel!
