Engaging, somewhat cliched romantic comedy,
By
This review is from: Over Her Dead Body (DVD)
This film has a good premise to generate comedic material - as Kate (Eva Longoria is about to marry her fiance (Paul Rudd) she is crushed to death by a falling ice angel sculpture... and she returns to haunt/harrass the psychic who begins to fall into a romance with him. Add to that the gay? catering business partner of the psychic medium (played by Jason Biggs) and there's a number of pretty funny scenes and plot twists. Although the plot seemed clever, Eva Longoria's character seemed to weaken the film - she seemed rather one-dimensional and stuck on auto-pilot in that role. The remainder of the cast seemed to get into their characters pretty well and the film was well-paced and fun... I personally like supernatural elements in films and this one has that as key to its premise... there's a particularly funny scene where the medium goes to a Catholic priest to ask for help in "getting rid of" the ghost and another scene where the ghost puts on a threatening, demonic pose a la The Exorcist to attempt to scare the medium away from the surviving fiance. If you like a somewhat cliched but still clever romantic ghost comedy you'll likely want to see this film.

An enjoyable romp. And I must admit, I was enchanted by Lake Bell who is not your average cookie-cutter beauty. Perhaps it is because of her that I give it an extra star, for, as movies go, this is more like a three star movie. Don't get me wrong, it is increasingly rare for newer movies to qualify for three.

I loved this movie! Very nice entertaining romantic comedy complimented by an outstanding cast! Most of us know Eva Longoria Parker from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and what she is capable of as far as an uplifting actrice. She is exactly what this movie needs and plays her part so well! Paul Rudd is very amusing as always and Lake Bell does an amazing job as well. Not a big fan of Jason Biggs, but he does surprisingly good also. Overall, a great cast!
Watch it with an open mind with family and/or friends and you will more than likely have a good time!

The premise is simple. A woman (Eva Longoria) dies on what was to be her wedding day. She returns to earth as a ghost only do discover that her former fiancé is seeing an alleged psychic and, worse, beginning to fall for her. The ghost begins to torment the psychic in order to prevent the incipient romance from blooming.
The rest of the plot should be pretty obvious, and, indeed, there is nothing surprising here. But if the plot is a strictly by-the-numbers affair, the performances are not so much, especially Longoria's, which suggests strongly that she had a great deal of fun with the role. That fun translates onto the screen, and the result is an amusing movie. This might not be great filmmaking, but it is an enjoyable way to pass 90 minutes.

Over Her Dead Body,

Devastated when his fiancee Kate is killed on their wedding day, Henry reluctantly agrees to consult a psychic named Ashley at the urging of his sister Chloe. Despite his skepticism over her psychic abilities, Henry finds himself falling hard for Ashley, and vice versa. But there is a big snag. Ashley is being haunted by Kate's ghost, who considers it her heavenly duty to break up Henry and Ashley's fledgling romance, if it is the last thing she does on this earthly plane. The movie had its laughs but for the most part quite silly.

I really really wanted to see this movie when it came out in theaters.
Then I bought it off of here, and I just really really didn't like it. I mean its worth seeing once, but It wont be one of those 'watch, rewind, and watch again' ones. I just didn't care for it.

not as bad as you would think,
This review is from: Over Her Dead Body (DVD)
my wife got this and i was dragging my feet to watch it with her. then i had some work to do on my laptop and so i told her to put it on so that i could work and (pretend to) watch it with her. but 15 minutes into the movie, i was actively watching it. i don't have to go over the plot as many people have already done it here. some of the scenes are outright funny and the film does do a respectable job keeping the viewer engaged. though she seems a bit manly i'm sure we are going to see more of lake bell in the years to come. not bad at all!

One of My Favorite Movies,
By Mark "L A Teacher" (Manchester, VT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Over Her Dead Body (DVD)
Recently I saw Over Her Dead Body. It is a super funny movie about a girl named Kate. Kate died on her wedding day, and came back as a ghost to drive the girl who liked her husband insane. Eva Longoria played the character Kate who was hilarious. She really did a lot of funny things in the movie, but also she showed how sad she was to see her husband without her. In the end though Kate (Eva Longoria) realized what she had to fix so she could go to heaven. I really liked that because she made her husband Henry (Paul Rudd) who was depressed happy again. This movie is one of my favorite movies because it shows how to move on and make everyone happy. I think that is a really good thing because if you don't move on you can make yourself sad. Paul Rudd who played Henry Kate's husband was really good because he showed how he was moving on but still really cared about Kate. The husband in the movie really showed emotion. The girl who liked Allison's husband Lake Bell who played Ashley was funny, because she showed feelings and reality to be freaked out by Kate. The reason why Kate freaked her out was because Kate (Eva Longoria) was invisible to everyone but Ashley (Lake Bell). That part was really funny to watch, because Lake Bell looked crazy trying to talk to some one who no one could see. Eva Longoria, Paul Rudd, Lake Bell and every one else in the movie really did a terrific job. The movie was super hilarious and I think you should see it, especially if you love silly movies. Over Her Dead Body is one of my favorite movies.

Life-Changing!!,
This review is from: Over Her Dead Body (DVD)
Over Her Dead Body is the kind of movie that is both a romantic and a comedy, and people who are lonely and miserable should see this film because it will make them see what they are missing out on. It is good-natured fun like the old-time screwball comedies that Jimmy Stewart used to be in, and even better than those.
The movie Over Her Dead Body is about a man-child played by Paul Rudd who is getting married to a terrible woman played by Eva Longoria. She is immediately killed (spoiler alert!) and he goes into a prolonged state of mourning and depression, which is where this movie takes a tragic turn. But will he stay like this forever? Not if his sister can help it! So she introduces him to her psychic friend played by Lake Bell, who is always good at slapstick comedy and much better at it than the late John Ritter, even though he was also great. Where the comedy hijinks resume is when Eva Longoria begins haunting Lake Bell to keep her away from her ex-fiancee, which is hilarious because she's completely dead. This movie is similar to Hello Again! with Shelly Long or Beetlejuice with Dick Cavett, but it is much fresher and newer because Eva Longoria is in it, and there is a lot you can learn about the afterlife, even though this is a work of fiction. On the other hand, the comedy antics and stirring story share more in common with a movie like Antonioni's The Passenger or some of the lesser known works of a young Roman Polanski. Over Her Dead Body will charm you from beginning to middle, and then also at the end. It reaches into your body, grabs your charm bones and heart, and gives them a good tug. Also it will tickle your funny bone, when you're not looking. I'm not saying it's Oscar material, but it's a perfect movie to see when what you want to do is celebrate life, death, romance, movies, and angels, ice sculptures, weddings, Jason Biggs, as well as belief in psychics and a higher power, plus the joy of being alive and the hope in an afterlife, and jealousy that women can have for other women taking their man (even when they're dead!) and personal diaries, candles, and love.
