Faith is the Key in Hammond, Louisiana,
By "faithisthekey" (Hammond, Louisiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Over Jordan (Hardcover)
I thought this book was GREAT and should receive the C.Scott King's Award and the Caldecott Medal. The author does a great job of keeping you in suspense. The plot is original and is plausible. The sequence of events builds to the climax. Johnston also does an excellent job of taking you through a series of intense events. The plot is well constructed. The characters are very convincing and credible. Roxanna's character shows development and growth when her father leaves her in charge and when she travelers the river. Joss's behavior is consistent with her age, character, and background. The style of writing used is very appropriate to the subject. I would strongly recommend this book. I found it to be very emotional. It teaches several lessons. One of which deals with facing one's fears, assisting people in need, determination, being responsible, maturing, love, and respect.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were very believable and "real" in what they said and did. I was eager to find out "what happens next?" The history was part of the story rather than something that interrupts the story. I would recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction, especially the Dear America books.

Over Jordan, Over and Over Again,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Over Jordan (Hardcover)
The year is 1936 and its been ten years since Joss showed up. Roxana has loved and cared for Joss for as long as she can remember back. Her and her father participate in the Underground Railroad. When her father is called to Washington Roxana must help to free the blacks on a plantation. After reports of a barbaric slave owner abusing blacks, it becomes clear that Joss and her Fiance must flee up the river. This story is all about Roxana helping them by disguising herself as a young slave owner.
I didn't like this book, because it really wasn't the kind of book that I would read. I love to read fantasy fiction, anything to do with Magic, Dragons, Mystical powers, and Wizardry. This book was a historical fiction. Now, normally I like reading, but this book really made me envy the blind. I know that may sound harsh but I really just couldn't get into this book. I kept on waiting for something to tell me that I could really get interested in the book, but that moment never came for me. Every person has their preference but this was NOT mine. I don't know how a person could write such an awful book, or how it could get past the editing company. |
