This is probably one of the most melodic and soothing counting books available. Not only is the wonderful rhythm established by the author almost hypnotic, but the beautiful illustrations are not only mellow and soothing, but they are fascinating and fun to examine with the little ones. This is a progressive number book; one through ten, which uses animals and their children to teach counting. The first verse features a mother turtle with her baby:

"...In the sand in the sun
Lived an old mother turtle
and her little turtle one.
Dig said the mother.
We dig said the one.
So they dug all day
in the sand in the sun."

The illustrations are executed in soothing earth colors and if the reader looks closely she or he will find dragon flies, ducks, beetles, worms, frogs and all sorts of little critters and quite a number of various well drawn plants and flowers. These are happy pictures simply full of life and promise.

The story progresses through fish, owls, rats (cute ones), bees, crows, green frogs (froggies), lizards, ducks and finally beavers....

"Over in the meadow
in a cozy wee den
Lived an old mother beaver
and her little beavers ten.
Beave said the mother.
We beave said the ten.
So they beaved all day
in a cozy wee den."

Each short verse has a full page illustration opposite featuring the animal and animal children in their natural habitat. But as I indicated above...look closely, there is much to see in each picture.

This work came out in 2002 and is just as popular today as it was the day it was released. It is a perfect one on one read although it does quite well as a group read also. This is the sort of book that just makes you happy when you read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great calming book for toddlers November 9, 2009
Format:Paperback
I received this book as a gift when our daughter was around 10 months old. She was not into it at all, and I put it aside as I thought it had too much text for a small child. However, I remember the gift giver saying that it was amazing how at some point it clicked with her children and they loved this book.

At around 12 months of age, my daughter started to show interest in books. I started to read this to her and to my surprise, it became a favorite of hers. The story is rhythmic and the illustrations are gentle, and I can rock her back and forth in my lap as I read it to her. It's a wonderful calming book when your child needs a moment of rest, a cuddle, or for right before bed.

I would definitely buy this book again, or as a gift to someone else.

This is a fun story to read. It is written in rhyme which makes it fun to read because it has a wonderful flow to it. I also believe it helps children how to create rhymes.
